I just watched "Moulin Rouge" on TV and remember hearing way back when (like 5 years ago) that it was being re-worked for broadway. Well, why did it not ever make it?
I truly think with A LOT of revisions, and the right director, set designer etc, it could be a popular musical. I mean we have a plethora of musicals using current/familiar music, i.e. Rock of Ages, Mama Mia, etc, this could be an enjoyable show to watch.
Please don't attack me, I am just interested to know if it was still in consideration, was ever in consideration, and if you think it could be good?

If I had to take an educated guess, it probably hasn't worked out yet because it's a huge undertaking to get the rights for those songs to be used on stage.
not sure about that "educated" answer, thought about it though, but Rock of Ages has many songs that would need to get the rights for.
I think not many people have taken the idea of making the movie into a stage show because of the record of shows that went from movie to the stage. Most of them bombed and closed, so not many investors would want to back up a show, even though some may think it might sell well.
That was a rumor, as far as I know. Perhaps it was on a producer's wishlist, but I don't think a creative team ever pursued it. The movie is such a stand-out on its own that it would be hard to duplicate (er, I mean translate) it onto the stage. Personally, I say let the movie be the movie and leave it alone.
Very true. The making of video of ROA seemed to imply that wasn't an easy task. And I'm sure there are plenty of other hurdles too. As mentioned, translating this particular movie to the stage would be challenging. Updated On: 3/6/10 at 11:07 PM
I am with StarUsher. Just because Rock of Ages was able to get all the rights doesn't mean they could for Moulin Rouge.

Moulin Rouge is one of my favorite movies.

There was a German Touring production called La Belle Bizarre Du Moulin Rouge. It featured many of the songs from the movie. I do believe that the plot was altered, but I never saw the show, so I don't know exactly.

Luhrmann announced it was going to be his next Broadway venture when preparing for La Boheme, but apparently he had the worst experience while on Broadway, and as he won't let anyone else touch it, then...that's probably the end of it.
I would also imagine that the game of securing right for this would be very difficult.
The artists used for "Rock of Ages" include Cinderella, Poison, Journey, Pat Benetar, Night Ranger, Foreigner, et al.
"Moulin Rouge" would require securing rights from Madonna, David Bowie, Elton John, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Queen, et al. How the secured all these songs for the film seems like a feat, but I'm sure it cost a lot more than would be realistic than could be expected to work into the running costs of an assumedly an already elaborate and expensive proposition.
Much of the movie success was due to the very unusual staging and huge special effects. I suspect you can look for Moulin Rouge, the Broadway Musical right after Avatar, the Broadway Musical.

I thought Baz was gonna do the show in Las Vegas.
What happened with La Boheme?
I remember in 2004 a full-page advertisement in the Calendar section of the L.A. Times for a stage version to open at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood that summer. I think a show at Paris Las Vegas could be great, I've even had staging ideas.
If they're going to go the Vegas route, they should think bigger then the Paris. Yeah the Paris would be the obvious choice but idk, it's a bit kitschy and shabby over there. I'm thinking more Wynn/Encore.
I seem to recall R&H saying "The hills are alive" would never be quoted in a stage version. The other songs would be pretty straightforward, but the quote from Sound of Music- no.
I suspect Baz has moved on, but can't let anyone else have a go.
Your question is absolutely valid and no one should give you any crap.
Does Courtney Love still own most of the rights to Nirvana? If she does, man, they got their work cut out for them lol...
I'd love to see it done. It could be quite the spectacle, like Wicked, if backed with the right bank.
