I assure you, you MUST see A Chorus Line, It's real theater. Something that gives you something to think about once the show is over. There are alot of good entertaining shows on broadway but i recommend ACL.
I havent seen Spring Awakening but i have heard outstanding htings from firends of mine so you may consider that too. Other entertaining shows I recommend are:
Drowsy Chaperone
Lion King
Mary Poppins
Legally Blonde
Hairspray

Posted: 7/25/07 at 9:23pmWell, if your talking about a chorus line, it doesnt matter if you sit in the orchestra or not, its a really small theatre and Any seat is a good seat. I sat in the 2nd to last row int he mezz. and it was around 40 dollars and the view was great

Please guys, I need to know between Spring Awakening and RENT. I like the music from RENT better, but I don't know how well it works on stage.
I think I wanna see ACL.

ACL is good... great dancing plus youll see Michael Bennet recreated dance.
Rent is good too.. It's just a bit "dated" for me.. if I will you - I'll go with Spring Awakening- the stage seating is not that expensive. The only problem with ACL is its expensive...plus August is tourist season.. you said youre a student ? I think youll enjoy SA more

re: MUST SEE Shows This August. #63
Posted: 7/25/07 at 10:02pmI dont recommend rent. The first act takes forever and gets REALLY boring. You can always just get the OBC Recording if you like the music.

Frost/Nixon.
There aren't many chances a theatergoer gets to see a time-capsule performance. Frank Langella's late-night phone call to Michael Sheen is one of those rare, momentous events on the stage that happen every 10 years or so.
You'll get a crack at Jersey Boys and other musicals like "Mary Poppins" for the next few years but once Frost/Nixon closes it is gone forever, at least in its seminal version.
Frank Langella is one of the finest actors of his era, Michael Sheen is a rising superstar, and Michael Grandage just might be the finest director working today. I don't see how there's even a question about passing on Frost/Nixon for a musical.

Try to get Spelling Bee, too. You have a chance to go on stage and spell with the others. If not, its still a hilarious show.
Chicago isnt bad either.

Posted: 7/25/07 at 10:09pmI know you had doubts about Les Miserables, and yes the current production is not quite as good as the original, however Lea Salonga is well worth the ticket price, and now Drew Sarich has taken over as Valjean and is sure to be giving a unique interpretation of the role!! Not to mention many new cast members who might be making this revival better than it was back in october... You might want to reconsider it...

I agree with speedjeans and say Frost/Nixon. Yes it's a play, but it's well written and has some great performances.
Change it up! You don't have to JUST see musicals!

Don't see les mis, it is just a reproduction of the old show... nothing new to see. Same thing with ACL plus I'm sorry but a lot of the cast just isn't that good. Don't see Drowsy or Ave. Q they are both touring, so is Jersey Boys. The only reason to see RENT is to see Anthony and Adam (if they are in when you are going) otherwise it is constantly touring everywhere.
See Frost/Nixon - it is pure magic. The acting is some of the most remarkable that has been seen in 10 plus years
Spring Awakening - A lot of people on here knock it because it got popular (though they say because it just isn't good), or because they are traditionalists, but it really is a good show. Definately worth seeing, ten times better than the current cast of Rent (minus anthony and adam)
Despite it's numerous problems, Legally Blonde is enjoyable if you are looking for mindless entertainment. It's not going to change your life but it's energetic and fun. If you don't have anything else to see it's worth it. Plus Christian Borle and Kate Shindle are great in it.
Avoid anything long running... they are mostly tired and should be closed.

Posted: 7/25/07 at 10:56pmNow I'm considering Frost/Nixon. I don't usually enjoy plays more than musicals, but now I'm starting to get interested in this one. Thank you so much, everyone, for opening my mind up a little more! yankees, sorry, but I just really don't like you. Plus, I've said numerous times I don't want to pay full price (Lion King) and that Mary Poppins is sold out. So, please, just stop being so annoying.

Posted: 7/26/07 at 12:12amThere are no tickets for Frost/Nixon after August 12th!

Between Rent and Spring Awakening I'd say Rent. Plus in August Anthony and Adam will be in.
The Year of Magical Thinking is amazing. another straight play, but Vanessa Redgrave is simply awe-inspiring. She is just getting better and better. And sadly you shouldn't have trouble getting tickets to it ~ and there are discounts out there.
I've gotta say, don't bother with Les Miserables. For specifics, see the rush thread...but let's just say I've never left a show at intermission before and I ran out of the theatre last night. Even Lea Salonga couldn't save it for me.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

You like musicals, make sure CURTAINS is on your list. Seriously - you'll have a *great* time. I don't know anyone that went to the show that didn't. Lots of people compare it to DROWSY because they are both "old fashioned" musicals and sort of comment on old fashioned musicals. I thought DROWSY was entertaining when I saw it, but I literally grinned from beginning to end for CURTAINS. You've heard of feel-good movies and this is a feel-good musical! And the cast is just wonderful. (I haven't heard of any announced vacations for August and from what I understand, this is a cast that doesn't really call in sick. Old school, my friend!) I fell in love with David Hyde Pierce, Debra Monk and Karen Ziemba when I saw it. (It was my first time seeing all of them.) I've seen the show 4 times now and I loved it more each time I saw it.
Other shows I'd recommend - AVENUE Q and SPELLING BEE. I've seen both more than once and they're a *lot* of fun.
