"I also found out that the actor playing Jesus is gay."
I hate to tell you, but I also found out that there GAYS in the audience. You must feel so unclean.
The real news in the original post is that there is buzz surrounding Magdalene.
I'm curious. Did you feel the same way about The Da Vinci Code and The Last Temptation of Christ, or do you confine your rage for what you deem blasphemous only to off-Broadway musicals?
And as for how do they have a right for this take on the New Testament? What right do you have to say they don't have a right. You don't have to like it, and you have every right to say so. But they have every right to do exactly what Dan Brown and Nikos Kazantzakis imagined in their novels and what Ron Howard and Marty Scorsese did in bringing those stories to the screen.
Finally, although this should be obvious, there is a difference in being anti-Christian and questioning and differing with Christian traditions, dogma and teachings.
Perhaps you'd find a revival of Brecht's Galileo also anti-Christian. After all, it wouldn't surprise me should you still subscribe to a the "anti-Christian" pre-Copernican cosmology.
whoops, I mean pro-Christian pre-Copernican cosmology.
by the way, OP, would you condemn a revival of Luther for being anti-Catholic?
So you joined today just to post this?
"Jesus Christ was celibate, born of a virgin mother."
Yeah, says who? Prove it.
Mary was as much a virgin as I am.
Jordan, I don't think anyone would ever doubt your virginity.
Wow!!! People are really talking about MAGDALENE!!!!!!
Ms. Phelps,
Please be under no illusion that anyone at BroadwayWorld.com shares or espouses Christian views like yours. We will not be taken in by this musical's point of view, or any musical's point of view on any subject, unless it has reason and logic.
Jesus had but one true message. I cannot see that message in the hate that your church espouses. I would recommend you listen to the song "Alas for You" from the musical Godspell. Provided you don't view the show as blasphemy, you might like it. It's based on the Gospel According to Matthew. Pay close attention to what the song condemns, and take a look at Westboro's actions. To switch to language you might find more conducive: God loves you, but He wants to come as you are and be healed. You're going to drive them away with threats and lamentations. Open your arms to these people first - lead by example as your Messiah supposedly did - and then tell them whatever you have to tell them.
I do hope that if Magdalene is actually any good, Christians will see it, and be encouraged to think about their faith, and question what they believe in. If they find it lacking, may they find more weight in the book they claim to study. If they find it holds water, good for them. This is America. They're allowed to have their own opinion.
Signed,
a former Christian, current atheist,
and all-around believer in Christ
P.S. To any wags, believing in Christ and being a Christian are two very different things. A great thinker is always appreciated, and "love thy neighbor" is still a revolutionary message.

gvendo, you can NOT be an atheist and believe in Christ because Christ is God. There is no other reason to believe in Him.
I am home now from my trip to New York- thank the LORD (because I want to be far from that place when it is judged by God). I was sent by my concerned church to investigate all enemies of the Faith and what I found was far worse than I could have expected.
I could have been loving and gentle with my words- but the problems are so serious that you MUST BE WARNED NOW that you are dangerously close to Hell if you believe in the bastardization of Christ's message.
REPENT, all of you who support homosexuals in theater and any musical that mocks Christianity with false doctrine or open hostility!
I will pray for you.
Like Charlie Brown, all I can say is "Good Grief!!!"

ok - I can't resist, although I usually avoid religion and politics.
I am not religious but I do consider Jesus a role model. And his teachings were based on love and tolerance. If you are not loving and tolerant towards all of God's creatures, wishing them well and hoping for their happiness, aren't you breaking his principal directive - that one should love other people as much as you love yourself?
Or should I just say, judge not lest ye be judged?
People. Use your heads. I can't be the only one who has noticed the sudden upswing of MAGDALENE threads on this board.
I have, too. But I think having someone tell us we're all perilously close to hell and that we shouldn't support homosexuals is an unwise advertising choice.
"gvendo, you can NOT be an atheist and believe in Christ because Christ is God. There is no other reason to believe in Him."
Phelps - you don't get to decide these things or tell others how to worship. your relationship with god is private and not for the world to see. surely you know the gospels. shame on you for condemning other souls. your "i'll pray for you" is prideful and you will answer for your sins.
the other thing is it's just a musical. a musical. not a ministrical. art reflects life, not the other way around. i did Hedwig at St Clement's theatre years ago. what does that tell you?

STOP BUMPING THESE THREADS! IT'S NOT GOOD FOR BORSTALBOY!!!!!!!!
People who believe in virgin births should probably not be taken seriously in their other opinions.
I'm not religious. I do believe in God and Jesus but I think the Bible is just stupid. Also if you believe in the Bible why are you judging gay people? Hypocrite...
I didn't think it was possible but Ms. Phelps has managed to insult the Jews, the gays, and liberals in one fell swoop.

If this isn't just a troll and is, as BorstalBoy thinks, a shill for the show, it's the weirdest f*cking shilling I've ever seen.

Borstalboy, I think a new musical opening in NYC is worthy of mention and I wonder why you don't agree. I've seen The Magdalene and enjoyed it- I don't know why that's so hard to believe. I have no involvement or connection to the show and in response to "tepid" reviews, I googled the reviews and "musical urges risk taking" is what comes up and it's pretty much a rave. So why reject the possibility that it might actually be noteworthy on this message board? Is it the next Book of Mormon? Probably not. But it's honest and passionate and makes no apologies for dealing with religion. I also have a big, fat lesbian crush on the lead actress. Take that, Phelps!
