The buzz around the current off-Broadway musical The Magdalene is centered around anti-Jewish sentiment. Pilate makes a few references to the Jews being "funny" but the ENTIRE EVENING should be an outrage to CHRISTIANS EVERYWHERE!!!
I went to see this production IN A CHURCH and was disgusted by the disrespect and disregard for Christ. He is portrayed as a man (definitely not the Son of God) who has sex with Mary Magdalene and has a child with her! The message of the musical is this- there's only one way to get to God and that is through physical, sexual love. Jesus Christ was celibate, born of a virgin mother. So where do these authors get the right to change the story?
There has been a lot written about Mary Magdalene. Whether or not it is true, I don't care. But when I see Christ reduced to nothing more than a horny man who gives all his power to a woman famous for being a whore... I'm not ok with that.
I also found out that the actor playing Jesus is gay. It seems to me that he and others involved need to take a look at the Old Testament.

you have any relation or connection to the Rev Phelps of Kansas by any chance?
What an enlightened opinion. You do know the Bible never states that Mary Magadalene is a whore and the idea that she is a whore is the same sort of revisionist history you accuse this show of doing, don't you? Because that is the case. The idea that Mary Magdalene was Jesus' most loyal disciple and lover is not a new one. It's told in some of the apocrypha that was wiped out of the Bible when the papacy decided women shouldn't have any power and revised and eliminated texts that said otherwise.
I don't mind you taking offense to this show. I do mind that you act like Mary Magdalene=whore is a biblical fact when it is not. It's as offensive a twist on the biblical accounts as Jesus and Mary bumping uglies all night long. There was another woman--a whore--who Jesus saved from being stoned to death. This woman was not Mary Magdalene. There is nothing to suggest it was Mary Magdalene. You claiming for a fact it is Mary Magdalene, and therefore any relation to Jesus is an abomination, is the only offensive thing happening in this thread.
Well thank God because Christians don't have enough to be outraged about.
Personally, I'm outraged at the lack of outrage so far which I think it outrageous in it's outrageousness.

Why? Were they eating shellfish and wearing polyester?
You're probably just a troll, but in case you aren't, can you tell me if this play references the coming of the lord? More specifically, does he come all over Mary's face?

I said that Mary Magdalene was FAMOUS for prostitution. Not that the Bible declares it (I DO read the Bible, thank you).
In The Magdalene- Christ states clearly that he is not the Messiah. The musical walks a fine line of feeling like a gentle Christian story while introducing false doctrines. I see it leading Christians astray and I want people to know that this is NOT Christianity!!!

I joined to warn New York that this sinful musical is taking place in a church in your city. If you want to see it, be my guest. I'll pray for you.
I think we should burn the theater down and rape all the unmarried women involved in the production.

That must mean it's fun.
kphelps319, I invite you to be my guest at PRISCILLA: QUEEN OF THE DESERT. I'll buy your ticket.
I'll be there this week with a pentagram and goats blood (cooled in a fabulous vintage Goonies thermos) having a grand ol' time. Maybe I'll bring a guy with me so we can make out and blow each other at the altar during intermission.

I hadn't even head of this show until your post, and I'm honestly intrigued now. I love a little controversy in art.

I DO read the Bible, thank you
if that is so, how is it that you have a computer? did not jesus command you to sell your possessions and give your money away to the poor, and then follow him?
Oh please. REAL Christians pick and choose what to believe in, depending on how it suits them. Everyone knows that!

What distresses me most is that you will probably think this is a good, Christian story because that's how this musical deceives you! It is performed in the guise of a sweet and gentle Christian musical but IT IS NOT!!! I won't address the many vile things that have been said in this thread- but I will tell you that if you see this musical and believe in the message- you will go to Hell.
I'm so happy for a Friday melt down.
The OP?
Are there really people out there who assume that the bible is entirely true?
Just he parts about hating fags
I hate that here in the UK we dont have such extreme religious people, you guys have all the fun lol

I SAW THE MAGDALENE! I'm taking my mother to see it because she is also a closed-minded Christian (like you, k... um... PHELPS?!?!). When Jesus said in the show that if god is love, love is god... I thought I had finally heard a TRUE Christian message. And if the actor who plays Jesus is gay... good for him! If god is love, then love is god. The Magdalene is Christianity for homosexuals, women and any one else the church trampled under foot over the last 2,000 years!!!!
Well, this is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
Really, it is.
OK....so let's just pose this question: SO WHAT IF THE ACTOR PLAYING JESUS IS GAY?...HE'S ACTING!! That doesn't mean anyone is saying that Jesus is gay.
Lastly, I think it's funny that it was ok to see it when you thought it was going to be Anti-Jewish, but now that YOU deem it to be anti-Christian, it's all wrong.
Funny, I always thought the teachings of Jesus AND God were of acceptance, understanding and forgiveness. I'm pretty sure there's a little something about God being the only one to judge people. And then there's the little bit about what's in your heart.
Hate and Jesus and God do not mix.
Who cares? Jesus musicals are perhaps the most boring thing in the history of theater. The Magdelene could be a transgendered kabuki narrated by Lady Gaga and have a live donkey show before the Act 1 curtain, and I would still have 0 desire to attend, because JESUS is BORING on stage.
Anyone else smell shill?
Good luck generating interest in MAGDALENE, everyone!
