Hey, just wondering...who is considered the male lead in Urinetown? This has been a long debate for me. Bobby is the protagonist, but Lockstock is the narrator...it's kind of like a Cat/Horton debate in Seussical. Also, Cladwell was in the running for Lead Actor at the Tonys...opinions?
An argument could be made that all three are the leads.
In my heart I think it should be Bobby...and yet Lockstock stands out so much... I think Cladwell is the lesser of the three yet his part is substantial too.
Stage and singing time there is no doubt: It's Bobby.
Both Cladwell and Lockstock have MUCH less to do.
Lockstock stands out more than Bobby when done well (obviously in Jeff McCarthy's case), but Bobby is the "lead" on paper. He has more singing and he has more dialogue. He is the protagonist. Cladwell, no matter how well he is played, kind of fades into the background behind Bobby and Lockstock.
I agree with ColorTheHours...when done right, Lockstock shines more than Bobby. But, if you want to get technical...Bobby is the male "lead." Lockstock is by no means the lead. But, what a great character (when done right).
Bobby is definitely the male lead, and Cladwell and Lockstock are supporting players. The fact that John Cullum was nominated in the lead actor category at the Tonys I think reflects his prestige in the theater world more than the size of his part. And the producers probably petitioned to have him put in the lead category so that McCarthy would have a better shot at featured (though alas, he was not nominated, nor was the show's real leading man, Hunter Foster as Bobby).
Bobby is the male lead. No question about it.
The bigger question is who is the female lead? Pennywise or Hope? That's a tough call for me.
Based on size of part I would say Hope.
