Mandy Patinkin: No "Evita" reunion concert

At the end of this interview with Patti, the question was asked if there's any chance of an "Evita" reunion concert.

Mandy responds, with a laugh, "This is it." But I wonder what Patti was going to say.
I'm not convinced her answer was going to be no.

I'd think that the revival would pretty much preclude any kind of OBC reunion, but maybe there is a shot one of the BCEFA events will do something with LuPone, Elaine Paige and Elena Roger since they are all in town.

I'm not looking forward to Elena Roger in the title role, but I do think it'd be in poor taste to do a concert while the revival is playing.

Not to mention probably not an option in terms of licensing the property. A reunion would have to be in Los Angeles or some other city I think, and definitely a one night charity thing. Does seem incredibly unlikely given LuPone's recent sentiments about ALW; though I imagine LuPone would enjoy the chance to sing the entire score live again - she's also said in several interviews, her technique is so much stronger, that she feels like she sings the material now, at age 62, better than she did in 1979.

But the thing with EVITA and LuPone is that she fully recognizes the role got her to where she is today. That's why she has no problem singing from that score. It wouldn't surprise me if she did a full concert of the show at some point. I'm sure she can still handle the entire score on her own, at least for a one or two night benefit. It's a historic production and there's an entirely new generation (or two) who would give anything to see the two of them sing the entire score.

I don't think the question was intended to mean "Any chance of this happening in the next X number of months." Just a general sort of "Would the two of you ever consider this?"

I think even talking about it (Mandy and Patti, not us) is pretty tasteless. Let these kids have their shot at it without sticking yourselves into it. That's so Jennifer Holliday!

If Bob Gunton isn't involved then I want no such reunion concert.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

Reginald, you're right. I didn't mean this season, although I would like to hear Patti make good on her claim (to be able to sing Evita better now than before) in the nearish future...

LOL I don't think anyone would DREAM of shutting out Bob Gunton!

Why do you say that? Contrary to popular belief Patti LuPone doesn't hate everybody who has either played a role she has played or played a role she wanted (ie she and Bernadette Peters are just fine as I imagine are she and Elaine Paige).

Patti and Elaine were onstage together for the Les Miz thing in London, as was Elena Roger.

Patti and Bernadette didn't seem as warm in their brief moment onstage together at Sondheim birthday concert, but maybe I'm just reading into it.

I absolutely WORSHIP Patti. But if there's any rivalry, it's clearly one-sided. Patti has talked about Bernadette before, and how she got all the roles that she wanted. You never see Bernadette talk about Patti.

But it was still never "I hate that Peters woman for snatching all the roles I wanted." Bernadette DID get a lot of roles that Patti had wanted. Why should she lie about that?

I get the sense that Patti wouldn't mind doing a concert of some sort with Elaine Paige.....with Bernadette or even Betty...that's another story. from RC in San Francisco (Nov. 23--26).

Even with all of her uncensored candor, I think if there were any honest to goodness ill will between Peters and LuPone, LuPone wouldn't have even mentioned the roles that Peters was cast in over her. Having animosity with Andrew Lloyd Webber for the way he handled her firing in SUNSET BOULEVARD and having ill-will over a fellow performer over their successes are totally different things.

I can't imagine LuPone would harbor personal resentments over that.

At any rate, I've seen Peters and LuPone together at industry events and have never witnessed what I would perceive to be ill-will or chilliness between them.

I don't think there's any more rivalry between Patti and Bernadette than there is between Kristin and Idina or there was between Mary and Ethel.

Usually, the women involved are professionals and even if their personalities have larger-than-life diva-like aspects to them, they still by-and-large conduct themselves professionally, especially in their interactions with other larger-than-life diva-like professionals. But fans must have their drama, and the fans like to imagine that their diva hate the other diva.

Except for Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. They really DID hate each other.

Agreed Pal -- and I think a lot of the supposed conflicts come from a sort of imagined fued between two very different style of performers that somehow captures the public's imagination.

Mary Martin and Ethel Merman were actually great friends. The morning Ethel Merman had the stroke that led to her eventual death, she was on her way to California where she was going to visit and stay with Mary in Palm Springs. They had great resepect for each other, as I imagine do Bernadette-Patti, Idina-Kristin, etc.
