Posted: 5/30/13 at 6:09pmIn my opinion, she does sound "good." Hell she belts to the rafters and I agree, most Evita's take the damn song to funeral level slow. However, this is a bit too fast. I don't think she was trying to get out faster. But she was rushing it.

I never understood all the LuPone hate. I first saw her in 1989 in Anything Goes and she was... MAGIC.
My first encounter with LuPone hate was shortly after that. I was interviewing Fred "Miss Gulch Returns" Barton on my college radio show. I mentioned how much I'd loved Patti in Anything Goes- he rolled his eyes and gave me a "Ugh". He said "New York's crazy about her, but I can't stand her".
To this day I'll never understand that comment. The woman is a brilliant musical theater performer.

She was very sexy in Anything Goes. I understand from someone in the orchestra she used to flash the orchestra every now and again to keep 'em on their toes.
And he confirmed some other rumors for me too, but we won't get into that. Let's just say one of the lyrics she sang in I Get a Kick Out of You was NOT true for Patti in 1987.

Before digital recording, audiotape used to stretch and compress, based on weather conditions. Heat and humidity could loosen and stretch the tape, make the recordings slower in some parts, and dry cold conditions could compress the tape, speeding up the

No, the tape isn't sped up. You can TELL the orchestra is playing faster, and she tries to keep up, and then she is singing faster.
And there are eyewitness accounts of her speeding up tempos toward the end of the run.

Posted: 5/30/13 at 7:31pmYou do realize that Patti is in a business that involves criticism right? It is not written law that everyone in theater must fall to their knees and bow before her. I love her voice, but I can see why others don't care for her.

I guess it's a matter of taste. Some people like soft and melodic performances while others, like me, like LOUD, electrifying ones.
To me this is Broadway heaven, I'm obsessed with her!

Posted: 5/31/13 at 2:13amIt IS Broadway heaven. I'm obsessed with Patti's talent and have been for the better part of 25 years now. I've seen her perform countless times and she is always wonderful.

Posted: 5/31/13 at 3:52amListen to Don't Cry For Me Argentina from the same performance. It seems the sped up version of Rainbow Tour, (A whirlwind tour in reality) was an artistic choice. On many levels this is what I missed in the recent (and hated in MHO) revival.

There's a video performance of Patti during the run on YouTube, and the tempo is just as fast as that final audio.
When you see it with the staging, I understand why it was done that way. It works well in the theatre. I think most of you are used to the cast recording, which was slower.

Posted: 5/31/13 at 8:07amIt was sped up as an artistic decision, against the will of the creators. It's been well documented in things like Tim Rice's autobiography. It wasn't just Patti rushing because she hated it and wanted to leave. Or her being on coke. It's not as black and white as that.

Posted: 5/31/13 at 9:37amI normally love Patti LuPone and I think Rainbow High is one of the most exciting numbers in the Evita score but if this is really the way this sounded that night in the theatre I wouldn't have been very happy. To me, it doesn't sound dynamic it just sounds rushed: I can't believe that she is connecting with the lyrics as an actor when they are taken at such a pace, and the speed means that vocally I think she sounds a little ragged, especially on the low notes which seem a real struggle. I think the OBC is sluggish, so I'd like to hear this number at a tempo roughly half way between the two, as I did when I saw other Evita's in this production. I would still sell a kidney to go back in time and see the LuPone Eva however.

QUESTION: Why does Patti LuPone take the tempo so fast?

Patti Lupone is such a treasure to Broadway and the World. The life she has led is truly amazing. I don't know any Broadway performer who gives it their all more than Patti. She will go down in history as One of the greats. She has given Some SPECTACULAR performances That will go down in history as " You had to be there to believe it". One of the Performances from her that have always made me go "WOW" is her Last performance in SB when she sings "AS IF WE NEVER SAY GOODBYE" That performances is truly legendary. Everything about Patti and EVITA is legendary. The way she fought through the score, the way she had a chorus member train her with the score etc etc. The way she trashed her dressing room during SUNSET and we can't forfet her JAW DROPPING TONY WINNING PERFORMANCE as Mama Rose! Everything about this woman is just pure AWW. She really is a gift from the Broadway Gods. We have Ethel, We have Liza, and we have Patti. Patti if you are reading this: PLEASE PLEASE DEAR GOD do a revival of HELLO DOLLY!
