I don't understand how someone could dislike Patti lupone ( except maybe the chorus of the original broadway cast of evita) But even then i don't think they had a right to be so horrible to her.
Anyway, i can understand if you don't like her voice or the way she acts or whatever but YOU HAVE to respect Her work ethic. She gives it 150 percent all the time and rarely misses performances. She even went through that huge Plane ordeal to get to The Performance of SUNSET B. You might not "like" her but people have no reason to disrespect her. She is a staple on the Broadway community. Broadway wouldn't be the Same without * throws up Evita hands* THE LUPONE!

People seem to love Patti or hate her. Whatever...
Many of the greats of any art form are polarizing. It's commendable, I think. It means you're not playing it safe or coasting through.

She's yelling at me AGAIN.
She's yelling at you again.
She's yelling at all of us....
I can't listen to the OBC because of her yelling at me.
I feel as if I am in trouble and will be punished when I listen to it.
I don't want to be LUPOWNED anymore!!

Wynbish, I totally agree!
With regards to her waist....she is a breast cancer survivor and could very well be on tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor. They can often make it challenging to keep trim around the waist. Just an fyi....
Here is a "quieter" performance : )

Jordan if you are talking about me, i think you have every right to constructively criticize Lupone. I can definitely see why some things she does would tick people off but i don't think you have any hatred for her as a whole. We may differ on what we think is remarkable and you have every right to voice your criticism for her just like i have every right to voice my Love for her. I don't see the problem here. Either way, im sure we can both agree that Lupone has given very memorable Broadway performances and Broadway would be a bit lost without *Throws up Evita hands* THE LUPONE!

broadway guy you are SINGIN MY TUNE!
Patti is the most dynamic, exciting performer to tread the boards in YEARS! I get that people have personal opinions, but I don't understand the hate for her and I never will.
No else and fill it like she CANNNNNNNNAH!

Okay, children, one more time
Jordan is right. Not every critique of one role/performance/moment of Patti's is a word of hate. Not every critic is a hater (God, I actually hate how prevalent "hater" is nowadays). Hell, you can be a fan and think she has some less-than-perfect performances or moments.
You can love on her and have all the idol worship you want, but enough with the "haters gonna hate!" attitude. Critics gonna critique. Patti signed up for that when she set foot on the boards. She can handle it. She's La LuPone.

Never said it was.
"Hell, you can be a fan and think she has some less-than-perfect performances or moments."
Well of course you can. I love patti but i never cared for her rendition of I DREAMED A DREAM for some reason. Just didn't fit for me.
" but enough with the "haters gonna hate!" attitude"
No on here is accusing anyone of hating her. I don't think anyone on here does hate her. Jordan doesn't think her rendition of RAINBOW HIGH is remarkable but that doesn't mean Jordan hates her. Im sure Jordan Loves THE LUPONE and I for one think we should all be nicer to Jordan and let him critique anyone his heat desires.
"Patti signed up for that when she set foot on the boards. She can handle it. She's La Lupone."
That's exactly why i love her, because she came out stronger because of the critics. Critics help a lot i think.

Posted: 5/31/13 at 2:21pmI don't think she was russhing because she wanted to leave, on the contrary I think since it was her last performance she wanted to make it extra special.

Posted: 5/31/13 at 2:27pmI think the tempo is a bit excessive for my taste. I'm sure the casual theater goers in the audience had absolutely no idea what she was singing at that point. I can only imagine, that the energy in that theater was on high and you can clearly hear the audience feeding off that energy and "eating it up".

She sped the show up so that she could get to her Les Mouches gig where her first number was "Pass The Nose Candy".

Posted: 5/31/13 at 5:44pmMy question is honestly, how do these powerhouse singers like Patti and Whitney (allegedly) do coke before a performance? I've never done it, but physiologically I would think it would screw with your nose and the back of your throat. And I'm still amazed that some singers perform after smoking, burning the vocal chords.

Patti was young at that time. You can basically do anything and be ok until you get into your late 30's- then it starts to wear you down. I believe Patti stopped whatever it was she was doing when she got married in 1987, and takes care of her voice now. I do not believe Whitney stopped, and she paid the price. Her voice was shot for all intents and purposes, at the end of her life.

Posted: 6/4/13 at 2:33pmI conducted Patti on Broadway in ANYTHING GOES. We got along very well, but before I took over, I went to the show. The producers were concerned that all of the tempos had gotten way too fast. We took care of the problem. The problem is that when things are so fast, you can't understand the lyrics. I had done the road company with Leslie Uggams, and took over the Broadway run. She is an amazing performer, but as the run goes along, she tends to push tempi. She was fine about making adjustments, though. We had a mutual respect.
