I'm not trying to start a rumor of any sort, but I hope that Mr. Shaiman will answer the following question:

I recently saw "Down With Love" (Renée Zellweger, Ewan McGregor) on TV. During the ending sequence, a sixties variety show style number, I could swear I noticed a delightfully flamboyant pianist whom I could swear was none other than our beloved Marc Shaiman. True Or Not???? Updated On: 8/28/05 at 11:46 AM

True

Watch the DVD... not only is Shaiman in it, but so is Whitman? Is that his name? But, yes, they're both in it...

the most awful 101 minutes I ever spent in a movie theatre!

You see, my Mom once sat through 6 consecutive showings of "Pillow Talk" at the Loews (pronounced Low-ees) Oriental in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn - She stayed out all day and night without calling home - when she got home - my grandfather hit her on the head with a shoe -

... so I was raised on knowing what these films were like..and what made them work - and this just stunk...

Made zilch at the BO too!

I enjoy the film. Indeed it is Marc and Scott during the end credits. I'm sure that Madge would've been much better in the lead role, and that's bound to create some bitterness.

I'll agree with all of you, though visually interesting, the movie exibits some questionable acting and a story concept that is too "cute" for my taste. Marc Shaiman sure is funny behind that piano, though.

I personally think they nailed the style all around (not just in the sets and costumes). But every way possible. I consider it a terrific success on that level.

I went back and visited a couple of Rock/Doris/Jim Garner movies after that, and McGregor/Zellweger & company acted in the exact same style and vein. Problem is, those older movies are also a little difficult to watch these days, except as nutty nostalgia curiosity pieces... Plots are thin and predictable, reactions are overdone, etc. So I just think styles have changed drastically, and no one wants to see their "modern" actors work that way anymore. Too bad they didn't get the joke.

Just take a look at an old Rock/Doris movie today (AFTER you've seen DWL), and you'll see it's no better (or worse).

Best 12 bars - have to disagree! They acted like they had never seen nor heard who Rock and Doris were..

Renee is silly and fake and remote - Doris was always stong willed and warm

Ewan was dapper and fey, Rock (Believe it or not) was the Oak Day needed to crash into!

Kathy said Renee is a coke whore?

Marc Shaiman is also mentioned in the book I just read. Diary of A Mad Playwright is the story of the play Legends which toured with Mary Martin and Carol Channing. Marc was brought in during the tour to create some musical arrangements.

Sarah Paulson steals the movie anyway.
Disappointing follow up of a film from the guy who brought us "Bring it On".

If you really want to help the American theater, don't be an actress, dahling. Be an audience..... Don't be taken in by the guff that critics are killing the theater. Commonly they sin on the side of enthusiasm. Too often they give their blessing to trash... Tallulah Bankhead

It was the last movie I took my grandmother to and we loved it. Funny , the one we went to before Down With Love was Bring It On, which she really liked. So I guess my grandmother and I were both fans of Peyton Reed and we didn't know it!

The problem with DWL was the script. I think that even DORIS DAY and ROCK HUDSON couldn't have made that crap work. I just thought they should have remade a DAY/HUDSON classic like PILLOW TALK and just updated it. God knows they do that often enough! There are plenty of kids out there who would never watch the original so bringing it to a new audience and all that.......!

Back to the thread.... I loved the score and bought the album but was disappointed that JUDY's version of DOWN WITH LOVE wasn't included on the CD! Anyone know which album I could get it on?

Every part of it is garbage - no charm - no chemistry and any sense that those two wanted to go at it!!

I have the Garland cut on a CD titled "Judy:That's Entertainment" released by Capitol Records but I think it may be out of print. Fear not though, the Collectibles label recently released this album with her "I Can Go On Singing" soundtrack on their 2 albums on one CD series. If you go to the CDUNIVERSE.COM site you can purchase it for $13.85.

I liked the movie. I thought it was directed great and the performances were really good. It kept my attention and I love how stylized it was. I smell DWL: The Musical.
