I think some of the reviewer's get and some miss that Lizzie "feels" unattractive because she has a strong will and takes no Man's sh*t.
She is not an unattractive Woman. She has two men wanting her, it's the underlying passage of age and that she has not accepted a "man" to settle down with, that make her and others feel she is an "OLD MAID"
Congrats to the amazing Audra on these reviews.

Well, Lizzie isn't supposed to be a beauty, but she isn't ugly either. She's just plain--average looking. Audra is definitely at least a couple notches above "average looking," but she's still "normal" looking enough to play the role I think.

Only 2 1/2 out of 4 stars.
Doesn't even like McDonald...loves Cullum...says literally nothing about the show itself.

Munk if you were talking about Simon not liking Audra, read again...Hottest of all is Lizzie. Not hitherto her fan, I was completely won over. Contradictory impulses, some friskily outward, some tormentingly inhibited, crisscross McDonald's face, body and entire performance, now eliciting smiles, now tears. Hers is a dichotomy that sets her fine voice atremble, makes her merriment moving and her sorrow infectious. The slow stages of her awakening desire keep us as involved as the most dramatic car chase in a movie. It is soul made visible and audible.
PEACE.

I can't access the Times review either, but the lead in line sums it up, I have a feeling...Ravishing of voice and Olympian of stature, Audra McDonald is an overwhelming presence in this underwhelming revival.
PEACE.

talkinbroadway is POSTITIVE?
gag me with a spoon, i'll be darned.
saw it, agree with all the reviews, especially the one that called her the anti-diva. Especially in this show, she's an actress that makes SO many choices and gives SO many gifts to her fellow actors to work with - I felt like, in some scenes, she made her fellow actors look much better than they did without her. (which testaments to Steve Kazee's talent, because he took each gift of hers and gave two back - their chemistry really is awesome) For me, Audra was better than Christine. And to all those who say she's miscast, I really don't know where you're coming from. And the whole singing matching the speaking thing, I don't agree. Audra's voice does not need to be throaty and earthy and belty to fit Lizzie's character - I think her voice comes from that gorgeous soul - and that fear of lonliness Lizzie has inside. And honestly, the score fits her voice SO WELL. It is written for a lyric soprano, and it's being sung by one.

Did anyone notice under the picture on the NY Times page online it says:
From left, John Cullum, Christopher Innvar and Audra McDonald in "110 in the Shade."
John Cullum is not in the picture. Maybe they are doing something to correct that and that's why the review won't come up?

Elysa Gardner has revealed herself to be a raging b*tch. I don't think I've ever begruged a critic before for disagreeing with my opinion, but I am disgusted by what Ms. Gardner is passing off as journalism.
It's not even a review. It's her writing about how she doesn't think Audra McDonald deserves the acclaim she gets. It absolutely valid to hold such an opinion if that's how you feel, but to allegedly review something and say that is just unprofessional.
Nothing about plot, staging, design, the other leads, the music?
So, message boarders... E-mail USA Today about what a crock of sh*t Ms. Gardner's article is.
Then we'll see who's overrated.
