With Mariah's fan base and her determination, the show will be a winner. I love her new album.

Mariah and Whitney would have to sing "When You Believe" if that ever happened re: Mariah Carey??

Hey guys, what are some good songs from The Emancipation of Mimi that I could check out on iTunes? Specifically songs that are very melodic, a la Broadway, and that especially ones that feature Mariah belting her butt off.

"Mine Again," "Stay the Night," "Circles," "Your Girl," "I Wish You Knew," "Joy Ride," "Fly Like A Bird"

STAY THE NIGHT and FLY LIKE A BIRD are my two personal favorites.

All of the songs listed above featured Mariah belting her butt off. I don't know which ones you'd say are "Broadway." The closest would be "MINE AGAIN" and "FLY LIKE A BIRD" perhaps?

Also: RANT: Here's what I don't understand. Everyone here has commented how much they would love for Mariah to write a Broadway score because she'd do an incredible job. Okay, I agree with you. But, she writes pop music. So, she'd most likely write a pop score. Frank Wildhorn writes pop music but everyone bashes him when he writes a pop score for Broadway. PLEASE explain. Thank you. END RANT.

I will add my opinion and say that while I really am not a huge fan of her's, Carey really can sing when she tries.

EDIT: just listening to some of her songs on iTunes, and I must say I really don't like how she uses her rifts a lot of the time. Don't get me wrong; rifts are the reason I'm alive re: Mariah Carey?? But she just uses then way to often and in weird places ... it's like a lot of her songs are competitions to see how many rifts she can use in one phrase.

Shoshana in Wicked = brilliant use of rifts IMO =)

I love, love, love "FLY LIKE A BIRD".

As far as Mariah writing a pop score for B'way, there's nothing necessarily wrong with that. Bacharach-David wrote a pop score for "Promises, Promises" back in 1968. "Hair" was comprised of a rock/pop score. "Two Gentlemen of Verona", "Grease", "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Godspell", "Rent", "Pippin"...all shows with pop/rock elements in their scores.

Exactly. So why does Frank Wildhorn get shot down when he writes a pop score for Broadway?

I still would like an answer to my Wildhorn question.

Also -
I think Mariah has some amazing songs that could easily work in a Broadway show. From her movie GLITTER, she wrote two great songs that could easily work on a Broadway stage: "LEAD THE WAY" and "NEVER TOO FAR."

Also, from her CHARMBRACELET album, I think maybe the song "I ONLY WANTED" could work in a show somehow. I love the lyrics.

"Once more into the wind,
the ambers scatter and the chill settles in..."

Huge Mariah fan here - but if she were to write a pop score for Broadway, the lyrics would have to be a lot more specific. And I mean, A LOT.

I don't like Mariah Carey anymore. I did when I was a teenager and then I grew up a bit and my taste and direction in music changed. I'm not saying the quality of her voice is lacking because that DEFINITELY is not the case. The power and range of her voice rivals all the greats and she is unique and original in how she places her vocal rifts in any song whether it is a cover or one she has written herself. Her music just does not move me in the slightest, and I am not alone in feeling that way. Different strokes.

She can put on a good concert and having a concert on broadway does not strike me as controversial or out of the ordinary. It WOULD be nice if she did more concerts for charity such as the Live8 in July, as she is such a highly sought after and admired artist it would be great to see her throw her support behind something like that. She might be doing more for charity actually, as I don't follow her career I don't know if she does or not. But after all the publicity about her nervous breakdown and her will to succeed despite the negative press and all round b*tchiness of the music industry, I say well done to her and may she climb forever upwards.

But I don't like her music.

every artist has the right to express themselves creatively in any medium they chose too. >>>

The merits of Mariah Carey not withstanding one way or the other, I would only add the caveat "if there is a market" to this statement. If people are willing to pay, then of course she has a right to be there.

Tell me how the show is, because I will be exercising my own personal right as a consumer and NOT consuming.

Well of course, those of us who are nothing but bitter know lots about rifts and nothing whatsoever about that imaginary term riff. But is Ramirez overrated? I digress and threadjack, all at once, in the hopes to start a RIFT.

Wildhorn is shot down because there's no substance to his writing. Can you really disagree with that?

Not only does he recycle the same melodies and pop hooks over and over, but - even more offensive - his lyrics usually have NOTHING to do with the character.

The reason those other pop scores have been lauded is because they have simple, eloquent lyrics that get inside the hearts of the characters singing them. Frank's lyrics are usually not even grammatically correct.

My absolute favorite Mariah song is "Drifting Away".

She doesn't riff (rift), she's sings with only a single piano, and when she hits the lasts few notes, you hear the power of her voice...

Oooh, I just got chills thinking about it......

"Drrrriffting awwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!"

Well Wildhorn doesn't write lyrics to any of his shows - so yes, they have nothing to do with his characters re: Mariah Carey??

Yes, very easily. I think his music as MUSIC is unbelieveable.

Wildhorn doesn't write any of the lyrics to any of his songs.

The only recycled songs that I can think of are "Nosferatu" from DRACULA which has the same chords as "His work and nothing more" from J&H, and the intro to "The Heart is Slow To Learn" from DRACULA, which has the same intro to "Where's the Girl" from SCARLET PIMPERNEL. Unfortunately, for your argument, "Nosferatu" was cut out of DRACULA and the intro to "The Heart is Slow to Learn" was replaced.

So, please explain to me which songs are recycled melodies. I know every song written by Wildhorn, so let's discuss.

I honestly believe the only reason why people rip on him is because they dont' like the book and lyrics to his shows. Again, he has NOTHING to do with them, except for CIVIL WAR, which he contributed to the book and that was a disaster, yes. But he had nothing to do with the book or lyrics in J&H, Scarlet Pimpernel or Dracula.

I believe his melodies are always fresh and catchy. The music for what it is...music, is gorgeous, even if the lyrics usually leave something to be desired.

I find few singers more abominable than Mariah Carey. Heck, isn't she known for her voice?...I saw her on th Ellen show not too long ago and she was lipsyncing, and despite her long years in the business, she has no presence, her performance came across as amature, and there was nothing unique or even catchy about the song she sang.

When she used to be able to sing, despite the fact that I wasn't crazy about her voice, I could see why one might've liked her. She had some decent songs and quite a vocal range. But now, how anyone could bare her is something I have yet to comprehend.

So, I think Mariah writing a Broadway score would be horrid. Heck, I think it's horrid when I hear her on the radio now, lol.
