Mariah Carey is an awful "singer". I have never liked her and I never will. This is a stupid idea, I don't care who is inspired by her, because she is not good. Her "singing" consists of breathiness and exactly the way you don't want to hear people sing. It's not even singing, especially when she is attempting to go high, it's awful and I dont' think she is good.
what an awful mistake

She is not a "singer" in the sense that Audra McDonald, Shirley Jones, Kelli O'Hara, etc... are singers, but she is a great pop singer when she uses her true voice. She hasn't used that on the past few albums, but she's returned to her senses and is singing the hell out of her new material. The girl is good. Not classically good, but pop good.

I agree. She has finally returned and found her true voice on this new album.
No, I don't even think of her as a good pop singer. Her voice is just annoying, and has always sounded kind of screamy to me.

Wow. I dont mean to get specific but...
'Her voice is just annoying, and has always sounded kind of screamy to me.' THIS COMING FROM A KELLY CLARKSON FAN!? Maybe you DON'T remember, but I recall a certain somebody from Texas on American Idol Season 1 SCREECHING thru the end of "Natural Woman", defining the term GLOTTAL STOP. Kelly Clarkson is a damn screamer. At least Mariah is the real thing.
Okay, back to the actual thread. Mariah Carey is one of the GREATEST female artists of our (well, at least my time, in my scant 24 years). Callas, LaBelle, or Franklin, she's not. But she can write a hook and a melody, and really SING it (when she feels like it). I would rather sit thru a Mariah Carey Christmas Show than half the crap on broadway right now. At least I'll know what I'm getting, and not some tired, loosely written book thrown on to an overblown IPod Playlist.
As far as people trashing her taste in clothing, big damn deal. Let her wear a mini skirt! Frankly, I see some of YOUR favorite B'way Ensemble members doing TAWDRY things on the regular basis that regularly offend me more. If Mariah wants to run around in a micro mini and a beaded butterfly tube top, I don't REALLY see how it's hurting anyone.
And lastly, I happen to know for a fact that Mariah is doing her research. She's working with some of b'ways best to put this thing together. I happened to be standing in the back of the theater last year at "Nine" when MC walked in to check out Jane Krakowski's "fly" in with Chris from Anti-Gravity. And especially now that she's just had her 16th No.1 single, I seriously doubt she's going to put just any old thing on the boards. And oddly enough, I didn't her the screams of horror when Linda Eder did nearly the same thing at the Gershwin not too long ago.
Too bad when Kelly sang "Without You" on American Idol it was at least ten times better than when Mariah sang it.
So...Carey can write a melody and sing it? Congratulations. So can Clarkson, but Clarkson's versatily and vocal control far surpasses that of Carey, and that's that. I'd like to see Mariah even try singing everything from Aretha to Bette Midler to Celine to Janis Joplin to Aerosmith to Annie Lenox to...heck, Mariah Carey, lol. In fact, Kelly can even sing classical and Broadway.
Does Clarkson get a little "screamy" sometimes? Yes...when she's singig with a more rock edge. But you think she SCREECHED "Natural Woman"? Come on! That high note in the middle (which most people I know call a "Mariah Carey note" lol) was sang more freely and smoothly than Carey sings notes like that.
Did I mention that Mariah was lipsyncing just a couple of weeks ago? Kelly certainly doesn't do that.
And I can't stand when she'll be singing a song and erratically switch back and forth from her chest voice to this airy, horrible head voice sound....when it doesn't even make musical sense to do so. And did I mention how amatuer her performances come across? You'd think that after so many years performing she'd learn how to connect with and perform a song instead of making the same face and moving her head and hand all over the place as if she were actually expressing something by doing that.
Honestly, there is the occassional time when Mariah doesn't grate on my nerves, and I can listen to her, but I can't help but think there'd be someome better to sing what she's singing.
lol, have I done enough ranting about Mariah for one day?

Social*Dynasty = AMEN. I loved every word of your post.
How do you know she's working with the top people on Broadway now? Also, did she stay for the entire performance of NINE or just walked in on a certain part? Please...elaborate! I'd love to hear your stories and by all means - WHO IS SHE WORKING WITH FROM BROADWAY?
Do you know who's writing the book to the show? I've heard she is...is that true?

I used to not care for her music but, after hearing her new single "We belong together", I totally changed my opinion of her. It's really catchy, and she doesn't do that shrill head voice transition as much as she did on her other previous songs. I wouldn't mind seeing her live on broadway.

Yes, Broadwayfreak. I'd also like to add that as of today, Mariah's album THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI is back at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 while her current single, WE BELONG TOGETHER is also at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Congratulations! She's back.

I can't say WHO she's working with, because as you know, these things change left and right, and I'd rather not give out information that may be deemed speculatory and get flamed all over the place. And yes, She did walk in just before Jane's number, she watched it, took notes, and was escorted out. The theater isn't too far from IDJ/Universal Headquarters and she had a meeting that night so she couldn't stay.
As far as the Kelly vs. Mariah thread...You were absolutely right about all you said about Kelly. BUT Kelly is 21, and Mariah is in her mid thirties. There's really no comparison. MC dropped her debut at 19 years old, and we ALL remember what she sounded like back then. We'll see how good Kelly sounds 15 years and 12 albums later. Kelly just jumped out of the proverbial show biz vagina. 12 albums later, that's assuming she lives to see her career thru Simon Fullers' indentured servitude he calls a recording contract. She needs to call Avril Lavigne and ask her to re-write 'Breakaway' when she finally gets an entertainment attorney worth their fee.
That is all.

I believe Fuller no longer represents Kelly. I'm pretty sure she dropped the representation Idol gave her.
And I was not referring to Mariah now. I was also considering her past because it would be unfair to compare a fresh voice to worn one. Mariah sounded screamy and did those erratic switches to her weak, airy head voice even in the beginning of her career. And if Carey was any good, she'd probably be capable of learning how to perform after 15 years and 12 albums...yet she has not.
And frankly, whether Kelly or not Kelly has a 15 year, 12 album career or not means nothing to me as far as her talent.
Clarkson cannot hold a candle to Mariah Carey.
That's all I have to say about that
But while we're on the subject of Mariah, I would love to congratulate her!

#1 on both the Urban & Rhythmic Top 40 charts
YOU GO GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRL!!!
Those chart statistics make are making me sick, lol.
Marquise, I love ya, but this is one thing I completely diagree with you on. I honestly think Carey can't hold a candle to Clarkson. Sorry, man.
(In case my opinion on the actual original topic of this thread hasn't been caught yet...no she shouldn't do anything on Broadway. She should stay away from all stages, cameras, and microphones in my opinion.)
I am putting this show in the same category as "The Apprentice" musical: no thanks, I think I'll pass.
BroadwayGirl there's no need for you to apologize.
You are entitled to your opinion.
I was just stating the facts.

Oh wow, yeah...Mariah is doing well on the charts so she MUST be good. Silly me.
I can also throw facts at you about how well Clarkson is doing, but honestly, who cares about how well an artist is doing on the charts? It's certainly no measure of talent.

Okay, this arguement is over. It's getting NO WHERE. We're turning into catty high school girls. Enough. You think Kelly's better and we think Mariah's better. Nothing's gonna change.
On a side note - Did anybody catch Mariah's 1920's/ 1930's musical gig last night at the MTV Movie Awards? What'd you think? I thought she sounded INCREDIBLE, except for that one obvious crack...but at least we know it was live!! What was that jazz/ swing entrance all about?

Did ANYONE notice her last night at the MTV Movie Awards?
I don't like Kelly Clarkson either. But she's great with the rifts (Audryna speak for riffs) too! Just not my cuppa.
All of Mariah's tv appearances in the UK recently have been her lipsyncing her song. But I'll be honest I think she may have lost a bit of confidence since her breakdown as the lipsyncing started after that period of her life. She'll come round eventually once she renews faith in herself.
I don't think either artists deserve the verbal massacre they have recieved. *tut tut*
Why can't we reserve our verbal massacres for someone more deserving like that chinese kid from American Idol or something?
As a New Yorker, Mariah will find a home on Broadway. Throughout her outstanding career, she has shown a love for the arts and even given back a considerable amount to art funding throughout the country.
Give the gal a chance. She is, afterall, known as "the Voice."

I really am shock that some of you think Kelly is a better singer than Mariah. GIVE ME A BREAK. Kelly wishes she had the range of Mariah.
Some of you really need to check out Mariah in her "Pre Rainbow Period", the woman was amazing. Than Rainbow came and she started this whole breathy type of singing, not a lot of belting. BUT NOW Mariah is back, and the vocals on MIMI reflect how her vocals were back in the day! The woman is really SINGING on this new album. The voice is definetly back.
