Saw both Marin and Alice. I was much more personally connected to Marin, simply because of her appearance and literal emotional breakdown in both acts. Her "I Dreamed a Dance" does what Alice's did not do for me. Alice's Diana was crazy, diseased, electric. Marin's is desperate, on the brink, breaking down as the show goes on.

I love both Alice and Marin.

Marin seems to be acting on a more authentically human plane. Marin seems more emotionally present, is doing more connecting, taking her time. Her "I Dreamed A Dance" was heartbreaking. She literally took her time, looked at Kyle, held his face and broke down. She seems more human and devastated. Like an open wound of grief that never healed. She seemed to be reacting, coming in and out of her emotional ache.

Alice on the other hand created more of a frenetic, surreal and elevated performance. She was stunning because she was conjuring all of this emotion while performing on a very exaggerated plane. It was a groundbreaking performance, but she did very little of the "intimate" moments that Marin did.

Two very different performances and each are perfect in their own way.

I was thrilled to catch the 7:30 pm the night of the Flea Market- 2nd row center seats and the show was wonderful.

As far as Marin v. Alice because the two women seem to have approached the role totally different I think the end results were both successful.

Personal preference was Marin, as I found her to be real in the role I felt like I could reach out and touch her. As Bettyboy pointed out just the job she does in the I Dreamed A Dance number was breath taking. I felt her pain so much that I was almost moved to tears myself, and I've rarely that moved.

It is funny though, because having seen both casts it felt like a completely different show from one to the other, and a year removed between viewings as well.

Marin "acted" like a real person, there was no artifice or theatrics or exaggeration. She would get triggered emotionally, break down, compose herself and get set off again based on what was happening.

She was absolutely committed and incredible.

Bettyboy72, I agree with you 100%.

I personally knew I was going to love Marin regardless after her performance in Enron. I think that Alice's was a little too over the top at times, but that's what made it what it was. However, as a minor note, Marin's facial expressions sort of annoy me at times.

It's kindof like Shoshana Bean and Idina Menzel. They were both stunning, but in totally different respects.

The only cast member who I feel is clearly inferior to the original is the new Natalie. She looks too old in my opinion and just overall not as good as Jen Damiano.

The only time I think Marin gets slightly exaggerated/theatrical is her "Didn't I See This Movie?" But I think it works.

Romgitsean, your point about the new Natalie is interesting to me, because I think she looks more age appropriate than Jenn. To me Jenn looks like she is 19 or 20 and Meghann looks like a young gir-high school agel. Meghann doesn't have the range of Jenn vocally, but I am sure she will train her voice.

Meghann Fahy is a year older than Jen Damiano, but in my opinion looks younger than her predecessor and brings an innocence to Natalie that Jenn didn't have. Jenn's Natalie was tougher, which worked given how resolute both of her stage "mothers" were.

Mazzie's attempt at the rock star dance reminds me of Elaine's "dancing" on Seinfeld.

Saw this last night for first time ever and, all I can is, Marin ROCKED it!!! She was simply incredible. Amazing voice, powerful acting that had me (and many others) believing her character, feeling right along with her, and fighting back tears. She did not seem to be playing a role, but rather living it while onstage. I am absolutely stunned that any human being can do what she does for 8 shows a week. She exceeded any expectations or hopes I may have had, and just blew me away. Gorgeous performer on every level. So grateful I got the chance to see this.

I've only see the show with Marin and I thought she was fantastic! Also, because it was her actual husband playing her husband on stage, I felt there was great chemistry and believability. It's a powerful and wonderfully written show. The entire cast is phenomenal and I loved the set!
