Posted: 10/3/10 at 3:20pmI am seeing the show again in a few weeks. Why are people saying that Marin is better then Alice??? Very curious to hear peoples opinions.

There are already a lot of threads that address this. I'm not sure people have the energy left to go over this again. Here's one that should help:

Both are worth seeing. With Alice's Diana, the emphasis was on crazy. With Marin, the emphasis is more on Diana's pain.

There is no reason to use word "versus" in the subject line.
They are two gifted actresses. One is not "against" the other.
You could just as easily have titles the thread "Marin and Alice."

Posted: 10/3/10 at 3:41pmShe' not. Marin does a great job, but Alice gave a benchmark performance. Marin's crazy mouth antics are so distracting that it's difficult to pay attention to her performance. Marin is playing a role, Alice WAS the role. It is still a wonderful, complete, brilliantly crafted piece of theater!

Posted: 10/3/10 at 3:58pmI've seen three different Diana's (Alice, Jessica, and Marin) and I have loved the performances of all of them. They all bring their own take to the role and make you see a different side of the character. As for personal opinion, I rather enjoyed Marin's performance (as a whole, the singing and the emotional acting) a bit more than Alice's. Whether or not she's 'better' is total opinion, since they were all amazing.

I've seen them both. They are both wonderful. People were saying that Marin and Jason would erase the memories of the OC. They didn't. I LIKED Alice, Brian and Bobby better.
I'm seeing the show again in a few weeks, happy to do so. (Although I'm rooting for an understudy or two -- just to mix it up.)

Posted: 10/3/10 at 6:20pmThe only understudy I have seen in this cast is Brian who went on for Kyle. I thought he did great. I've also seen Michael Berry as Dan and the doctors, but now sure if he's still understudying them. Have fun Mama! When are you going?

#9Marin vs. Alice
Posted: 10/3/10 at 7:05pmI've seen Marin, Jessica, and Alice, and all three gave wonderful and totally different performances...for me it's almost impossible to compare them. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Alice personally, but all three women are exceptionally talented and great in the part.

Posted: 10/3/10 at 7:10pmI find it hard to compare them because their portrayals are so different and they both completely work. I think it just comes down to personal preference. I give Alice the edge personally, but I can easily see why people prefer Marin.

Bingo.
Marin sings the role; Alice warbles the role.
Marin sings the role like it's a Rodgers and Hammerstein show.

Marin was the role too when I saw her. Not in the way that Alice was, but that's because she's not Alice. Marin's portrayal is very different. She's much more sad and introspective, and not really crazy. I wish she'd add a little bit more to it at times, but overall her subtlety was very refreshing. Alice's performance was so intense (in a good way) that she overshadowed the show. Marin lets the show speak for itself.
The only time her singing bothered me was in "I Am the One," though I do wish she'd turn down the vibrato. Alice's singing usually worked for me too because she made it fit the character. Jessica Phillips was by far the best vocally, IMO. I love what I've seen of her portrayal and I hope she gets to do the role full-time at some point.

Mazzie sings notes in tune that Ripley could never ever hit. I loved Ripley, but sometimes the vocals were just not pleasant.

Alice...too amazing for words.
Marin...Equal to Alice, however she sometimes sings as if she has a vibrator in her throat (akin to Sean Hayes in Promises, Promises)

It's called vibrato. Sean Hayes has a quiver. Please do not compare the classically trained Mazzie to the untrained Hayes. Please.

Especially toward the end of her run. Yikes. I saw her in late June and it was almost painful to listen to.
Alice Ripley was phenomenal, don't get me wrong. I thought she was great. But I much prefer Marin Mazzie in the role. Ripley was overpowering, sometimes for the wrong reasons. With Mazzie, it was just far more poignant for me (and beautifully sung).

I'm very aware it's a vibrato. It just sounds the same to me.

Are we talking about Jessica here? Because I saw Jessica my first go-round and absolutely LOVED her.

Jessica Phillips' first Broadway performance (which I attended- the night after the Tonys) was an unqualified disaster. I stand by that opinion. But, she improved greatly, and when I saw her again, I was happy to eat my words and post about how much I enjoyed her. I came to love her performance, and think she absolutely should have been offered the role full-time after Alice left. I'd kill to see her play the role again now.

I heard this opinion from a couple of people. It's sort of my experience with Michael Berry. I heard some stuff from him from his first night on, and was not impressed in the least. However, when I got to see him live on the show, I was VERY impressed and happy to, as you said, eat my words. So I do understand where adamgreer is coming from with this.

Posted: 10/4/10 at 2:40amLook they are professionals have not seen the show but can we stop comparing actors that do the same rolls look this one is better . Look one one a tony award but at the end of the day it is a hard role to play and very demanding. If they did the role first on Broadway we would of tonyed Marin and not Alice.
