For those of you who have seen both the Broadway and US Tour of Mary Poppins, do you know what some differences between the two are? I saw it on Broadway yesterday for the first time and absolutely loved it! The set design was very inventive and beautiful, and it made me wondering how the set is done for the tour...
Sometimes she flies in the wings instead of over the audience on tour, depending on the venue.
The set itself is a completly different concept due to the Banks House being to massive to load into most theaters. Instead the house is done like a pop-up book. As is scene in the youtube clip attached.
Mary Poppins Tour set
Whoa! I've sen neither the tour nor the Broadway production. On Broadway is the house on a hydraulic lift that can raise and lower it? That's the impression I got from the video.
^ On Broadway the 2 floor house lives upstage and travels as one unit downstage. The 3rd floor/nursery and roof fly in to either hover above the house or come down to deck level for the nursery scenes. The kitchen set (separate from the house unit) rises out of a trap (if I remember correctly).
Both sound/look impressive. I've been wanting to see this show, just haven't had the opportunity.
I had only seen the touring production two summers ago until I also caught the Broadway show yesterday, and really the only difference is that the House is more of a complete house set and not so much a folding doll house/pop up book. It's amazing how well they recreate the huge set and every other aspect on tour. Most of the touring company that I had seen two years ago is also now in the Broadway production.
Steffanie Leigh was very good vocally and acting wise, but has anyone seen Maddy Trumble on tour?? I'm sure she's incredible, because she has to be that talented to get the role at what, 23 years old? Nicholas Dromard was very good, but when Gavin Lee plays the part he definitely steals the show. Megan Osterhaus was incredibly impressive as Mrs. Banks and Josh Assor danced Neleus with great elegance. I enjoyed it!

I've caught both productions. First with the broadway production in 2009, and then the tour in 2011. Both were simply magical, and it remains a personal favorite. Does anyone else agree that the second act just kicks ass.
