Hey, a friend of mine bought Matilda tickets, and I was wondering how the balcony seats were on the far right side on row F (like 26-20). He was afraid of the poles on the balcony that were near the center of the balcony, so he decided to buy them on the far right. I was wondering how the view was from those seats. I am very excited to see the show, but I just wanted to know what to expect in regards to the view. Any insight will be appreciated.

Posted: 1/22/14 at 11:14pmThe issue won't be the view - well maybe the balcony is pretty far away - but, the sound. It sucks! I highly recommend listening to the score before going and having some idea of what the lyrics are all of the group songs. Otherwise, Matilda is enjoyable.

Posted: 1/22/14 at 11:17pmThanks. I'm way ahead of you there. I own both the British cast recording and the Broadway Cast Recording. I didn't know about the sound. Thanks for letting me know.

Posted: 1/22/14 at 11:19pmThe sound will be fine - not great, but fine. The sound is best in the orchestra, worst in the mezzo, and better in the balcony. (I have sat in all 3 locations multiple times). I have sat in the balcony 3 times (2 of those in the last row) and had an excellent experience. Your view shouldn't be bad at all. Even if your seats seem to have a partial view, the show is so big I doubt you will miss much, if anything. I quite like the view up there because you can see everything!

Posted: 1/23/14 at 12:06amI sat in the last row in the balcony all the way to the left and the sound was awful...echo, muddled sound, so far away from the stage. It was by far the worst experience of the times I have seen the show.

Posted: 1/23/14 at 12:28amThe entire sound design for the show is terrible. It sounded like I was listening to the show with cotton in my ears. For a show that had some of the most technically amazing production elements I have experienced in a Broadway house, it was shocking just how bad the sound was.

Posted: 1/23/14 at 1:14amIt seems like there are certain areas that have perfect sound, and other areas are just black holes. I could barely hear the orchestra during the show, and when I stood up at curtain call, I could suddenly hear and orchestra very clearly. The speaker was hanging right above and and was facing the rows behind me, so the people in the Mezzanine behind me were probably able to hear just fine. It really depends on where you sit, I think. Even though the sound was less than ideal, Matilda was easily one of the most amazing theatrical experiences I have had. So, enjoy!

Posted: 1/23/14 at 1:47amTotally. Maybe it was horrible and I just didn't notice? I mean, I'm sure I didn't get ever lyric, etc, but I was just so excited to see it, etc. I thought the view was great as well. I could see the back wall of the set, which is nice knowing you're not missing anything. I need to go back to see it. It's been almost a year.

I did go back a few times after my initial balcony experience. I liked the show more each time I saw it - probably because the more I knew it, it was easier to overlook the sound issues. I still didn't LOVE it as a whole...but it certainly was more enjoyable when I could hear more of it.
And for me personally, though I almost always prefer seeing shows from the Mezz up high for a wider view, in this particular case, the closer to the stage I was the better..as the expressions and small nuances made the show for me.

Posted: 1/23/14 at 2:52pmI sat in row A of the balcony, center. The sound was good, and as long as you don't mind being high up, you should be fine. Anything too far back is always a crapshoot. Enjoy!

Posted: 1/23/14 at 3:03pmI sat in the side balcony and could see fine. There are pillars in the balcony, and I don't remember exactly where the pillars are located.
