isn't Matt doing BOUNCE in December?
Even if I don't think Cavenaugh's age is an issue for Tony, he doesn't strike me remotely as a "gang" type.
He looks more like the kind of guy they would beat up.
I'm not sure what kind of "realism" Laurents is going for here.

I agree, I can't see Matt as a Jet, and I think his age is still an issue depending on how young the Maria looks/is.
They should cast Eminem.
They need some thug mofo in the role because that's what gang members looked like in the 50s.
I just want an official announcement, damn it.
It seems Laurents spoke too soon about his vision.

Regardless of whether Tony and Riff are the oldest in the gang, Matt is still too old to even play an old member of the gang. I think the show will definitely lose something with him in the role, no matter how talented he may be.

Larents is the one saying he's going to cast this more realistically and also remove the "Daddy-O's" and "Ooogly-Poos," not me.
I think Cavenaugh's casting works fine for WSS, but it doesn't jive with Mr. Laurents' latest "posturing" about what he wants this revival to be.
Cavenaugh would be a conventional approach to casting Tony on Broadway.
I will hold out for an official announcement before I get dissappointed...
My Wonderwa11 is correct. I just heard from my good friend, who works in the industry and is an extremely reliable source, that Cavanaugh has indeed been given the role of Tony. there is no official announcement to post, but I'm sure it will be made within a few days.
I couldn't agree more with you, Besty.
Cavenaugh looks exactly like the kind of person who'd get beaten up by the gang, not the founding member of a gang himself.
Cavenaugh is certainly in the Larry Kert, Brent Barrett mold.

I think he'll be fine, it's Anita and Maria that are the two more important roles casting-wise anyways.
Also, the role of Riff has been cast, a solid choice in my opinion too.

I'm really curious to hear who Riff is, I haven't heard any names yet.
I don't think he's too old for the role at all. And he has an excellent voice

Just not who I would have cast, but good for him.
The link I have to this information is Matt Shingledecker. His girlfriend, Alison Knock, just closed summerstock at Peach State with my boyfriend.
I said I wouldn't necessarily believe it either until there was an official announcement, so...I came here to see if anyone else knew anything about it.
the more I think about this casting, the happier I am with it. thanks for the pic, jefferydog. matt may be 30, but he looks much younger!
I really hope the rumor isn't true. I've seen Matt in GG and ACA and neither time I was impressed by his talent (or charm).
Too bad you didn't see him in the short lived "Urban Cowboy."
Those last 2 roles were a waste of his talent.
Maybe we should see it before reviewing it?
I know! Wild idea!
I thought he was great in urban cowboy, but i agree he was pretty bland (and similar) in both GG and ACA..

That would be simply too shocking. It'll never catch on. XD

I have to agree with jeffrey1dog and Kyle about Cavenaugh in 'Urban Cowboy'; he was spectacular as Bud. I think he sang the hell out of the songs, and was loaded with charm. But in fairness to him, his roles in 'Catered Affair' and 'Grey Gardens' were much smaller, supporting ones, and though Cavenaugh did everything he was asked, they weren't great showcases for all he can do. The fact that his name is coming up (albeit in gossip) for possibly 'Bounce' or 'West Side Story' seems to imply he's on the short list of go-to guys for young leading men. Also, Cavenaugh's been doing a number of the plays at Project Shaw. Time'll show how versatile he can be.

I enjoy the fact that both of the guys who are being discussed for this role (on BWW, at least) are Ithaca College grads. Makes me smile.
