coming to NYC in late May for oldest son’s grad from Columbia Law. Youngest son (24) is joining us and willing to join us at some shows. We have already promised him Hamilton (which we saw and loved). Trying to narrow it down to two more. The options are Hadestown (my #1), Tootsie (my wife’s favorite movie), Network (son loves Bryan Cranston and enjoyed All the Way), and To Kill a Mockingbird (my favorite movie). Help!

Posted: 4/16/19 at 9:21pmI’m glad I saw Network for Cranston’s performance and I haven’t seen the others although I want to. My instinct is to tell you to see Tootsie because I want to see it so badly, but I think you should probably see Hadestown and TKAM. Everyone seems to agree Hadestown is the superior musical of this season and TKAM is considered to be superior to Network, which I appreciate now more than when I attended although Cranston is worth the price of admission alone. Plus Jeff Daniels isn’t going to be in TKAM forever. That being said, can you even get three or four reasonably priced tickets last minute to TKAM?

I'd say Mockingbird might be your best bet because that show/cast won't be around forever. Next go for Hadestown because I think it absolutely lives up to the hype (in my opinion) and if you don't get tickets ASAP it will be even more expensive. I'd say flip a coin with Network and Tootsie. I've only seen Network out of those two, and I'd say if you were deciding between the two the question would just come down to if they want to see a musical or play.

Thanks. Booked Hadestown just to avoid the price surge after the reviews come in tonight. Still debating on what to fill the rest in with...

To Kill a Mockingbird (my friends who are lawyers all enjoyed watching this play.)

Definitely To Kill A Mockingbird, in my opinion. It's a wonderful rendition of the story, and it's just done so well. Network was great, but it's definitely not as strong of a show as TKAM. Bryan Cranston does an amazing job, but the rest of the production falls flat, and it's disappointing. TKAM is absolutely fantastic. Good going on the Hadestown tickets, too!

I'm also planning a May trip and want to get Hadestown tickets. This may be a really dumb question, but when there are 2 performances on Wednesday, will the starring actors perform both shows, or are we likely to see understudies? We could go to both performances on Weds or do Thurs evening.
Thanks for any tips!

In May I think you'll be 100% fine - that's the period between Tony nominations and the Tonys, and the cast will want to be at the top of their game for voters. So barring any health emergencies, I think chances are solid that you'll have the full cast.
[Edited to say that as a general rule, all actors do all 8 shows in a week. After a show's been running for a long time that might get more lax depending on the performer, but unless it says otherwise on Telecharge/Ticketmaster (that there's an alternate for certain performances), you can expect the billed cast to be performing when you go.]
