Just saw this! Very exciting.
Well I guess Andrew Garfield and Daniel Radcliffe would solve the problem of how to make it a hit. Do I want Merrily to be the first Sondheim experience of the audience they might attract? Not sure. Still if they can get those two wow!

Zendaya is Mary (to the tune of Zendaya is Meechee)

I think most people's first Sondheim experience is West Side Story or Into the Woods.
Do we know what NY Theatre Workshop's involvement is if this is indeed aiming for Broadway, not off-Broadway? Or was that incorrect reporting in the NYT?
That pairing is thrilling, and Friedman's production is excellent, but in terms of scheduling availability might only make sense in a limited engagement (such as an off-Bway nonprofit) unless both are willing to commit 6+ months.

I agree on WSS but I don’t think it counts when it’s only the lyrics. I’d like to be wrong but is Into the Woods really that mainstream in the general population? Maybe the film version has made it break through.

I'd say Into the Woods is pretty well known due to the pervasiveness of the "junior" version that only covers act 1 in schools across the country. It's also his most accessible, "family friendly" material due to its subject matter. Besides West Side Story, Into the Woods and Sweeney are probably the Sondheim shows that are most well known by the general public.
