Merrily We Roll Along revival aiming for Broadway in 2022

The 2019 BBC radio documentary Into the Stephen Sondheim Archive was broadcasted again today with a new introduction by Maria Friedman. She said that up until recently she was working with Sondheim on a Merrily We Roll Along revival, aiming for Broadway in 2022. I assume this will be based on her 2012 West End production.

It was also pointed out that in Michael Paulson’s final interview with Sondheim that NYTW was/is in talks to mount that production, or a reimagined version of that production with Elliott still attached, I believe.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jake in this; without someone like him I assume it would have to be at a nonprofit.

Because its the first production of the show that actually fixed the show

This production of the show is perfect. I hope it finally makes its way over!!

How would we feel about Adam Kantor as Charlie? He might be a little old, but the London production also went for an older cast, rather than a younger one like the original production. I've always wanted to see him in a Sondheim show

I saw the remount of the Friedman production in Boston and loved it. A part of me hopes they'd consider bringing back Umbers and Humbley but I also wonder whether Charley and Frank are roles that they could age out of.

I, too, would like to hear an answer to this. Love the score. Worked as a dresser on a production in the late 80's. One of the most exhausting jobs in the theater I ever had.

Saw the City Center production the night Sondheim came out at curtain call with some of the original cast members and sang.

I really enjoyed that production. Wasn't crazy about Lin's "Franklin Shepard Inc.". Not a fan of his acting period. But the show was good. Celia was wonderful.

I highly doubt he'd reprise the role.

I have to say, that I've never been a big fan of Sondheim. Except for this show, this is my absolute favorite thing he's done. Very exciting news.

I saw it in Boston as well and was so taken with it I went back and brought my mother with me. It was such a wonderful production. I would absolutely love to see Umbers and Humbley in it again.

I can’t imagine having to dress the actors in reverse like that. You’re a trooper.

Yup saw it in Boston too and loved it! I'm guessing it didn't do well financially in Boston and that's why it didnt' end up going to Broadway back then?

saw the Encores version of this awhile back and not sure this would ever be a "hit" on Broadway. It's an interesting musical, but if they go to the Company route and get some big Broadway names, it could do well for a limited engagement.

We as a society have progressed past the need for all-white casts.

Also, for what it's worth, both Lea and Laura are so ridiculously wrong for Mary. Lea is a Gussie, Laura is a Beth.

I saw the filmed version of this and enjoyed it. But the show is always going to have the inherent problem that the book is NOT good and doesn’t come close to matching the brilliance of Sondheim’s score. Even the recent Fiasco Theater (Off-Broadway) production that tinkered with the book couldn’t fix it.
It’s a shame because I’ve grown to love Furth’s book of Company, but Merrily’s book feels pedestrian in comparison.
At most, I could see this being done by Roundabout on Broadway, not a commercial production.
