I'm an atheist, but until the past few months I never had the slightest problem saying or hearing "Merry Christmas." For one thing, it's a national holiday as well as (for some) a religious one; for another, why should anyone take offense that someone is wishing them something good? And so I thought that those atheists (and others) who took offense were just being silly.
However, Trump has changed all that. He has made "Merry Christmas" into exactly what those silly atheists always thought it was: a deliberate affront to people who don't agree with Christian beliefs. When I hear a stranger say "Merry Christmas" now, I can't help but think there's a possibility they might be Trump supporters who are really saying "**** you, atheist." Of course, there's a much greater chance they're wishing me a nice holiday, but the phrase is now forever tainted. For that reason, I don't say it and I don't respond to it, and I'd encourage thoughtful people to do the same, as a rebuke to Trump and his garbage supporters.

The thread was wishing Merry Christmas... on Christmas Day.
Don't read into something that was meant to be friendly, it's not worth.

It's not a big issue, but there are lots of things we discuss on here that aren't big issues. :)
I'm a libertarian, but I think functionally I'm a radical leftist in the era of Trump. I would hope that progressives would like that!

If only you could have demonstrated how you don't respond to it in this thread.

I don't see any reason to avoid typing out my opinions on a thread if they're relevant. I do try to avoid hostile responses to other posters, though.

Sorry that this nice greeting is now tainted for you. People wishing it to you have no idea you are an atheist and are just trying to be nice. Many years ago, I wished a stranger "Merry Christmas" and he replied "Happy Hanukkah" to me . I had no idea the man was Jewish and just smiled and wished him a "Happy Hanukkah". I look back now and think this is great example of how people can express their differences in a nice way. In your situation, if people wished me a Merry Christmas I would just say thank you and move on.
