"...by the way, I'll save you six months of wondering and tell you now who the next musical-actress tony nominees will be:Ebersole, Chenoweth, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy and Debra Monk..."
What do we all think? Sounds like a great list but with Kristin, Donna's and Debra's shows not even open yet, is it even a reasonable prediction?

Would be shocked if it were any different.
Anybody else here think it'd be fabulous to see Debra win?

Monk's a lock. She's one of the ones who's already proven herself in the very role that will be eligible. Plus, Tony loves her. I don't know how many times she's been eligible and NOT nominated, but it would be a small percentage, if any.

She has appeared on Broadway 8 times as part of the original cast. I am not sure about the size of her role (and therefore eligibility) in some of her earlier shows.
She was nominated 3 times out of her 8 appearances, and won 1 of the 3.
I gather she was probably ineligible for PUMP BOYS, PRELUDE TO A KISS, and NICK & NORA. We probably shouldn't mention COMPANY, and I didn't see AH, WILDERNESS.
But she WAS nominated for REDWOOD CURTAIN, PICNIC, and STEEL PIER.
I would say she has a pretty good track record. Considering her roles and their size (eligibility), she has probably been nominated about 50% of the time.
Regardless, based on out of town buzz, Monk is a lock.

Thou Shalt Not
Reckless
Ah, Wilderness
Company
Pump Boys
to name just a few.
Aren't the Mary Poppins fan girls gonna flip, though?

Those five seem insanely definite. Has there been a year in recent memory with seemingly so many locks? In a Tony category?
I hope Lea Michele is nominated in the featured category although I doubt it...

Posted: 11/28/06 at 12:11pmI'm less worried about the Mary Poppins girls. I am more worried about the HAIRSPRAY/WICKED/Laura Bell Bundy fangirls who get pissed when LEGALLY BLONDE flops. And let's not even discuss Block.

Why do you think BLONDE will flop Munk?
I have faith in Jerry Mitchell.
And if Grazie can tweak PQ we may have to discuss Block.
But Musto's predicts look good.

God, I forgot about Block. She might be the one major nominee for PQ. Unless it flops altogether. Which of course it WILL NOT! It WILL NOT! Do you hear me? It CAN'T FLOP!

It will flop because the Palace is too big. Plus, I don't have faith in the show at all.
Lea Michele is simply not strong enough.

Posted: 11/28/06 at 12:25pmWorry about Lea Michele, then. The committee will want to inaugurate a newbie into the mix, which means one previous Tony winner is out of luck. Michele will most likely count as leading, as she is *the* female lead in SPRING AWAKENING. Plus, she's young, she has been on Broadway for years, and she gives a heart-wrenching performance in what will be the season's hottest new musical.

"in what will be the season's hottest new musical."
Where are you getting that from?
"The committee will want to inaugurate a newbie into the mix"
And that?

Posted: 11/28/06 at 12:40pmI read that article and it went further on to say that each one of those "greedy whores" has a Tony already. Maybe he meant that to be funny, but I did not like that part.

I've seen SPRING AWAKENING several times, and I can tell you that this is the kind of show that will not only appeal to masses of youth, but it will also therefore be just the kind of show that the Tony folk will want to push for award recognition, so it can have a long life on Broadway and on tour. Does CURTAINS have the shelf life that SPRING AWAKENING will?
