that made me crack a smile. reminds me of the old days. and i love that he calls them all "greedy whores". that's the way they SHOULD be referred to.

As much as I think I'd like Spring Awakening, I don't think it will get really any nominations as far as acting. And there's no way it's the next Rent. Rent is something totally different. Rent deals with 20somethings living life, whereas Spring Awakening is just a story about teens "coming of age." Just because it has rock music in it doesn't mean its the next Rent.

Hon, you haven't seen SPRING AWAKENING.

I hope I'm not alone in thinking it is rather odd and presumptious to give out Tony nomination predictions to actresses whom you haven't seen in their roles yet? Based on their past performances? What is he thinking? Every role fits an actor/actress differently, and simply because you liked someone in a completely different role in a completely different show, why would you then assume they are not only going to be good, but they are going to give an award worthy performance in something you've yet to see?

Oh, and as I am clearly one who is rooting for Pirate Queen to clean up it's act before it comes to town in April, and I did see the show more than once in Chicago, Ms. Block and a few of her cast mates (Fraser if they give Tiernan more backbone, Balgord if they lower her keys and clarify the "style" of the queen, and Chait if the writers make Donal more than just a "villain" ) should not be overlooked when nomination discussions take place. If they can strengthen the book of this show, and in turn give more dynamic to the various characters, this show could be one to be reckoned with come nomination time. And this is based on seeing these actors perform basically an incomplete show out of town. I look forward to seeing these performances again if the actors are given worthwhile material to work with in the show's next incarnation.

The "race" is really to see who is getting nominated. Ebersole should have this award wrapped up by now. If she doesn't win, well, then the problems the Tonys have are much worse than I thought.

Of the nominees, I would say the one with the greatest potential to be bounced in favor of someone else is Donna Murphy. I could see her spot going to either Laura Bell Bundy, Stephanie Block, or even Ashley Brown. If Pirate Queen is a complete disaster, they may shut it out entirely, despite Block's apparently solid performance. If Legally Blonde is a hit (which it has an outside of becoming), Bundy could ride that wave to a nomination. Otherwise, I think Murphy gets nominated.

As long as Ebersole wins, I don't care who the other nominees are.

I saw Curtains and loved it, I can promise you it will have the shelf life it needs.

I also think that Debra Monk was fabulous and deserves a TONY...for featured actress. I just didn't think that the role was big enough to be considered the lead of the show. And for the record I overheard in five different conversations, Debra being compared to Ethel Merman.

Edit: Rath- Have you seen it? Updated On: 11/28/06 at 10:14 PM

For anyone who thinks Ashley Brown, Laura Bell Bundy, or Stephanie J. Block will be nominated, I'd really like to know who you think is going to be eliminated (out of Ebersole, Chenoweth, McDonald, Monk, and Murphy).

And it would be WONDERFUL if John Gallagher Jr. got a nomination for Spring Awakening. He reaaallllllly deserves one.

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but do we know (or have a guess) if Brian D'Arcy James and Marc Kudisch will be considered leading or featured?

neddy - not yet, but I can't WAIT!! I just wonder at the idea of Monk being in the Featured Category since she's billed above the title - and if she's nominated as Featured, Ziemba won't have a shot at winning. We'll have to see what happens there.

I'm just back from GREY GARDENS - great performances all the way around, but no Tonys are locked up. Perhaps the hype was too much, but as much as Ebersole is fabulous, I don't believe she's THAT fabulous that she's a guaranteed win. We need to see all the other performances first - unless there is a huge percentage of Grey Gardens the Documentary queens in the voting population. I do think Wilson was fantastic - truly - but again, I can't believe with so many shows yet to even preview that we can predict anything at this point.

The only reason people are drawing comparisons between Monk and Merman is because the sub-plot involving Monk's character in Curtains has to do with a mother-daughter relationship somewhat reminiscent of Gypsy.
As I've said before, Monk's role is not a leading role in the way Ebersole, Brown, Bock, Bundy, Murphy, Chenoweth, and McDonald are. That is mainly because Curtains is an ensemble-driven piece much in the same way The Drowsy Chaperone is (not to start drawing comparisons between the two shows). However, within that ensemble, Debra Monk definitely provides a great performance and comes close to stopping the show with a couple of numbers, and she truly is the queen of one-liners (the afternoon I saw the show, the house burst out in laughter at her first line). So she definitely deserves a nomination.
I am surprised so many people are doubting Donna Murphy's chances. This is the woman who has been nominated for every single leading role she has played on Broadway and has won twice (many agree that it was her health problems that stopped her from winning the third time, not gonna beat a dead horse though). I'm also ignoring the other times she has been nominated for Drama Desk Awards for her Off-Broadway performances and the fact she did her first Broadway show when she was a sophomore at Tisch. Plus, she will be directed by Hal Prince. Seeing Murphy perform live on stage is a master class (Ashley Brown should head to the Biltmore soon and learn a few things or two). I have absolute trust that Murphy will--as usual--give a splendid performance and will most likely pick up a Tony nod along the way.

FoscasBohemianDream- I also think it was because of the way she belted some of those songs that they compared her to Merman!

Infinite: I am assuming Brian D'Arcy James will be leading and Kudisch will be supporting. James is playing Adam - the same role that Alan Alda played - and Alda was nominated for best actor.

And I haven't seen it on the boards yet, but Alan Alda will be providing the voice of God in the revival.

I would like Lea Michele to get a nomination but it is probably not going to happen. Lea IS the female lead in Spring Awakening and will def not be considered for the feature category.Anything Donna Murphy does is amazing and, she will get a nomination. Kristin Chenoweth has done the thee roles in The Apple Tree at Encores and has gotten praise for it. Anyway she is amazing and will get a nomination. I have heard Ebersole is amazing and will get a nod. Audra is Audra. Of course she will get a nod. You can't doubt somebody who already has four Tonys. re: Michael Musto's Tony Predictions

Christine needs to win this year. I also hear that Jackie Hoffman is killing everyone in REGRETS ONLY.
IF ONLY I COULD SEE IT. If anyone has a ticket I would gladly buy it. That is the hardest ticket in Town.
Plus, I hear it is a contender for a Drama Desk.
But have I seen it? NO! Do I want to see it YES.
Would I kill for a ticket? YES!

Becoz: Just because Lea Michele is the ONLY standout female role in SPRING AWAKENING doesn't mean she is considered a lead. It would be wise of the producers not to petition her and leave her as supporting, as she is now. She doesn't have a prayer in th leading category.

She doesn't have a prayer in the featured category either, but if hell freezes up sometime, she'll find it easier to slip into the featured category.

I haven't seen any performance besides Block's, so I really have nothing to base it on, but she was incredible in her role. It is a shame for her that the field is so tightly packed, because in a less heavy year, I think she would be a lock for a nom for sure. I'm still holding out hope that she'll be able to pull it off, somehow, though. She deserves it.

Karen Ziemba will be a strong competition in the Featured actress category. She definitely steals the show, actually, I've stated before that her role feels more leading than Monk; her star turn in the Act I finale is mind-blowing and proves how she is one of the best triple-threats on Broadway at the time.

InfiniteTheaterFrenzy, I will be very surprised if John Gallagher Jr. does not get a nomination. He does some hardcore acting up there, and he has the best voice in the cast. Personally I think he has a great shot at winning.

I think that Karen has a bigger part than Debra but not big enough to be considered a leading role.

I think the only leading role in Curtains is David Hyde Pierce.

This season's musicals are *filled* to the brim with past Tony winners. Regardless of how the nominations pan out, this season is going to be very exciting.

munk- Thanks for the clarification on the Apple Tree contenders. I would think that both men will get nominations in their respective categories. I'm glad Kudisch is featured.

wannabeafoster- I hope everyone else is pulling for John Gallagher Jr. like we are!

I love Gallagher. He was terrific in RABBIT HOLE, and absolutely wonderful in SPRING AWAKENING.

He definitely has the edge thus far, but don't be surprised if John McMartin wins the award. It will be his lifetime achievement Tony. Gallagher has a decent chance of being nominated, but I doubt he will win.
