That's great that the 2 young girls are going to the theatre at such a young age.

I'm happy the First Family is celebrating Broadway, yet when Ragtime was at The Kennedy Center last spring, not a single one of them attended, even though it was just a few short blocks from the White House.

And it was about the struggle of African-Americans. I would've thought the Obamas would've been all over that!

$10 says they will be at THE LION KING tomorrow...

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Well Ragtime is pretty intense and maybe they deemed it a little to intense for a eight year old.

CapnHook -

I'd take that bet because I have to believe they've seen it already. My best guess would be "The Miracle Worker".

And not everyone thought the revival of Ragtime was the second coming. It was a satisfactory production at best with a couple performances that came close to the originals. Maybe they saw the original production and didn't see the point of going again (as apparently many audience members did).

Memphis and Addams Family seem like the 2 most appropriate shows on Broadway this season for the kids. Can you imagine the uproar if they went to Lion King and Wicked?

They saw The Lion King in London for one of the girl's birthdays. I wouldn't be surprised if they saw West Side Story, Wicked, In The Heights, Fela!... something along those lines.

When we were walking in to the theater tonight around 7:50, there were 4 completely empty rows in the center orchestra, just under the overhang. I remarked to ljay how odd it was to see so many empty seats that close to curtain. Now I know why.

We have a presidential family that regularly supports the arts and people are bitching about the shows they're NOT seeing?

Why would you bring to young children to Next Fall or American Idiot? Hardly appropriate. And Come Fly Away, while it may have nothing objectionable in it, isn't something the kids would enjoy.

Some people will biotch about anything.

Good for the Obama'a both supporting the arts as well as introducing their children to it.

I bring my 9 and 13 year old to many shows....and have for years. Probably one of the best things I do as a parent. They are already fighting over what next to see.

While we see all the "family"/Disney stuff--we are now able to begin seeing shows that are more mature and sphisticated -- thank god!

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
