re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

I think it's a pretty good lineup but I just realized that the pricing is the same yet it's only for 6 shows instead of 7 like last year. What the!?

And considering Mirvish history for cancelling/switching shows, I'm a bit dubious for this higher pricing (I'm guessing to reflect the "better" shows?).

And no bonus offer for renewing/signing up early?

Is anybody else annoyed by this?

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

I wonder what happened to Mary Poppins...I mean, I know that Little Mermaid might be being re-conceptualized and that the tour has been delayed, but there's not too much in the way of family-friendly shows (Billy Elliot, Secret Garden - which I don't have too much faith in, either). Oh well, more incentive to book Wicked then, I guess. Speaking of Wicked, their second national tour is already all booked up for the dates that the Star speculated. Their first national tour, however, is looking good for a visit up here before they hit Chicago.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

@hubee: I think you might be looking at the "after May 1" price. For the most part, it looks like the price went down for most price levels although the price per show is up a bit. The major exception to this is for anyone in rear upper balcony because those prices barely went down and for Wed mat and weeknights, the price actually went up!

And yes, no early payment bonus is a serious drag. There's nothing to be gained from paying up front.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Well if you wait to pay then you will have to add the HST.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

I think the 10% off discount at Honest Eds is very lame, if not a little insulting.

I'm still waffling back and forth over whether or not to sign up. I have my doubts about both Billy Elliot and Secret Garden happening and Mirvish has certainly not earned my trust. If I end up seeing the Little Mermaid or something instead I'll be pissed.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

I've been a subscriber for years, and Im really torn about renewing....I had an incident this year, in which I sent an email to Mirvish....I was completely blown off, and my concerns were not addressed....a member of my family who is also a subscriber filed the same complaint, and was treated much differently...Is it because he has Orchestra Sarurday night seats and in have Saturday matinee front balcony? I dont know, but I was really disappointed with the way it was handled. Several times there has been screw ups with my seats, and with the lack of insentive this year, maybe I should just buy discounted tickets for the shows I want to see....At least with Dancap, they offered discounts to both Miss Saigon, South Pacific, and I have almost $40 in credit for future ticket purchase....Im really torn this year

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Yah, I actually wrote them 2 season ago too and got a call and got YELLED AT (and funny enough, now that I've gone into the office, I can spot who did the screaming).

In theory I really shouldn't renew (and I organize it for a large group) especially with no guarantee that the shows they've announced are what we will get, mixed in with the fact that I'm in the cheap seats where it's not as great of a deal as before.

Considering i've seen them offer similar price/show deals individually through the season, what's the point in locking myself in to the whole season? (Esp. this current season which has sucked big time, and I've already seen the next two shows (Young Frank/Legally Blonde))

But I'll probably be a total sucker and just sign up again.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Can I ask what happened that made you write in? Why on earth did they yell at you?

I wrote once last year after The Colour Purple because they ushers had a group of people standing directly in front of my seats for a good 10-15 minutes (waiting to let them to their seats). I couldn't see the stage at all. I got no response from Mirvish.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

There was a group of us that had some issues/feelings about a show that was included in the subscription. These issues were strong enough, that it led us all to email Mirvish. The individual with the Saturday evening Orchestra seats received a heart felt apology, and an offer of free tickets to another show of their choosing. I wrote the same complaint, and was told my opinrion was wrong, and Mirvish is right in all of their choices, despite the similar complaints they received (thats putting the response I received nicely). I was not out for a freebie, I just could not understand the vast difference in response, to the exact same issue. I found them rude, and when I responded to the email, surprise surprise, I was ignored. Like hubee, I have already seen YF and Legally Blonde in NY, as well as Billy....so I'm really on the fence about renewing...by contrast, I had purchased South Pacific tickets right when they went on sale. After Miss Saigon was announced, Dancap was offering a package deal. When I called Dancap to ask what they could do, as I had already purchased SP, they immediately offered me a nice discount to Miss Saigon. At least they are trying to please the customer.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Yah, in my case, when they replaced one of their shows with Riverdance, everyone in my group had already seen it and didn't want to see it again (once was bad enough) so I requested (in writing) about getting a refund or switching my tickets to another show (and doubling up and seeing something else in their schedule again).

Strange thing was they actually granted me my request but then handed me to a higher up who then yelled at me because they were granting it to me but never again. I should have complained to even higher ups but just never got around to it (since I got the extra tickets to other shows as I wanted).

But yah, I've seen Billy in both NY and London and Funny Thing. Both are great, but that means I'm really getting the subscription for the other shows, and again, they've already postponed Priscilla once (the main reason I bought for this season) and who knows if anything else will actually come to fruition.

I've usually had great responses from their offices but it was just that one guy (who I've pinpointed since and never seen him happy anyways so I think he's like that to their employees as well).

Hubee: Sounds like your signing up so you can have something to complain about. You dont like this Season and your not happy with the upcoming Season. But you have decided to sign up anyway.

No, to me it sounds like we're having a discussion about Mirvish and it's current subscription. We're not allowed to say anything negative here?

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Wallybag. Huh?

Seriously? you think that from what I said?

I would be signing up because I want to see Prescilla, Secret Garden and Sweet Charity and I don't mind seeing Billy Elliot and Funny Thing again.

I wouldn't sign up because in the past 3 seasons, 4 shows have been cancelled and replaced with shows that I was not interested in, or I have seen before. And it was so much trouble to let me out of the replaced shows that if it were to happen again, I'm not sure I want to deal with it.

Add in the price increase and no early sign up bonus, one wonders if the subscription is really the best choice, and I wanted to hear what others were thinking.

I'm all for the success of Mirvish, in fact I'm usually championing them, hence why I think they could improve in some stuff that might make them actually better. But having the biggest subscriber base in North America (or is it world?) I think is making them complacent because they are doing so well anyways.

Anyways, yes, I know it's in the contract that they can change shows anytime but seriously, it's getting annoying.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

the last few years i've found it better to pick and choose. there are offers/deals out there to be had. The lineups have had too many changes and dancap has stepped up their game. i only have so many theatre dollars to spend so it makes sense for me to just buy the shows i really want to see.
#140

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

1. The biggest in North America? SO many presenters in so many markets claim that right its hard to believe any of them.

2. Has Dancap REALLY stepped up their game? Honestly? Toxie was a flop. They booked a theatre for SUMMERTIME only (that we know of so far) and have announced TWO SHOWS that will play there... hardly stepping up to Mirvish's level this year so far. And out of those two shows one is a good national touring production, the other is just a transfer of a REGIONAL theatre from a regional producing company that constantly produces hit or miss work.

I'm not so sure DanCap has risen to the occasion yet. Shame, because there's a lot of opportunity, and a lot of shows Mirvish isn't picking up on.

That's Dancap's problem.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

i think dancap has stepped up pretty good. i saw jersey boys and toxic avenger in the last year and will see both the summer shows. that's 4 shows i didn't go to see from mirvish. i know their not at the same level but they have brought some interesting shows this year.
#145

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Dancap had a fantastic first season (which includes Jersey Boys), but Aubrey Dan warned at the time not to expect that season to be the norm. He said it was important to make a big splash for their debut.

I've enjoyed every Dancap show I've seen (and I've only skipped Divas and Happy Days) but for almost every show I've gotten excellent seats at a deep discount and often the houses have had lots of empty seats. This is why I'm holding off on buying tickets for the summer shows.

I should point out that percentage-wise, Mirvish was actually more successful at delivering their announced season last year. The two cancelled shows amounted to 28% (probably their worst record ever) of the season, whereas Grinch made up 33% of Dancap's "season".

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Mirvish's "Special Offer":

An offer like no other to see MMLJWW on Wednesday, March 10. Tickets are only $9.99 (+ $0.01 Facebook improvement fund). Use code WEDFAN. (Not valid on previously purchased tickets, subject to availability, service charges and conditions apply)
#147

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

I'm finding it better to wait and see rather than getting the whole subscription. Why plunk your money down several months to a year in advance when (a) shows may change; (b) shows may become discounted anyways, and you can buy those tickets weeks before rather than months before; (c) and even if not discounted, I've been able to get prime seats that I probably wouldn't have gotten on a subscription (12th row centre orchestra to Fiddler, for example) a week before the performance.

Could rent the Elgin (wasn't a problem in their first year), and while they've announced they have a deal with the Four Season Center for a "summer season" of shows, they could have booked 2-3 tours for a few weeks each after SP instead of the regional Saigon. And, if used for a limited few week run, the Music Hall might not be a bad choice.
#149

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

The problem with the Elgin is that it has no backstage space. Unless you have a small tour (like Avenue Q or Spelling Bee were) then you don't have much use for the theatre. You also can not run concurrent shows in the Eligin & Winter Garden, due to sound issues between the two.

The Music Hall is not a touring house (non-Union), is way way way too small (backstage) and is not technically up to par in the least.

They could have booked 2-3 more tours instead of Miss Saigon, but I think a co-pro with a US company is much more ambitious and could potentially lead to more exciting things in the future.

On a different note, Wicked Divas, with Jennifer Laura Thompson and Julia Murney, will play the Roy Thomson Hall with the TSO Pops October 19th and 20th. If Mirvish does indeed book Wicked for October 20th through November 28th, even though the TSO and Mirvish are seperate, that's smart publicity.
