re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

All I have to say is FINALLY!

and that hopefully this actually does in fact happen.

The eStage newsletter says:

Billy Elliot the Musical will be the lead title in the 2010/2011 Mirvish Subscription Season. The remainder of the season line-up will be announced soon. Single tickets will go on sale to the general public in September 2010.

Hopefully Priscilla will actually happen this season as well. If we actually get all these shows that have been announced so far (Billy Elliot, God of Carnage, Forum, hopefully Priscilla and possibly Wicked), then I think I would definitely consider doing a subscription!

"...But although current plans call for another "Billy Elliot" tour to open up in a couple of months (most likely covering the west coast), it's likely that the Chicago production will head to Canada."

http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/the_theater_loop/2010/02/billy-elliot-the-musical-announces-toronto-plans-.html

Here's hoping for a sit-down Toronto show, with a [mostly] Canadian cast! My Guess is it will get a sit-down at the Royal Alex, pushing Rock of Ages into the Panasonic.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Have they announced who is in PRISCILLA?
#108

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

If any of you are attending, please say hello to me. Just look for the tall guy carrying the Proud-fm Flash-microphone.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Anchoring the Season is the phenomenal new musical hit - a 10-time Tony Award®-winner - BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL! Composer Elton John, writer Lee Hall, director Stephen Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling have joined forces to create this inspiring and immensely entertaining musical. The toast of London and Broadway will soon be the toast of Toronto!

The Season also boasts another Tony Award®-winner with Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman's magical musical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's great book THE SECRET GARDEN. It's an all-new production of a beloved classic story!

Another classic musical comes this Season from the famed Stratford Shakespeare Festival - an acclaimed production of Stephen Sondheim's hilarious "ancient Roman" musical comedy A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM.

We return to modern times, and reality, with the quirky, poignant and very funny West End hit CALENDAR GIRLS, based on the inspiring true story of a group of middle-aged British women who pose for a charity calendar with a twist that must be seen to be believed!

Yet another extraordinary woman takes the spotlight in the great Neil Simon, Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields musical, SWEET CHARITY. Our tuneful tale of the big-hearted Charity and the girls of the Fandango Ballroom, is an exciting new staging from Britain's cutting-edge Menier Chocolate Factory Theatre.

A wholly different sort of singing girl group comes to us in PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL, the flamboyant new comedy from Sydney, via London. PRISCILLA is an eye-popping must-see!

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Wasn't God of Carnage and Wicked supposed to be in this list? Maybe they will be extra shows? I was looking forward to both of them.
#111

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

After all the speculation a few of these seemed to come out of no where. Where's God of Carnage? Wicked? (Again). I know things change, but funny.

I also didn't see any renewing subscriber bonuses. In previous years we were given tickets to Sound of Music, We Will Rock You, etc this year a 10% discount at Honest Eds? Lame!

That said, after all my complaining I will likely renew my subscription. I gave serious thought to not buying it and just purchasing tickets that interest me, but the subscription forces me to see shows I may not have otherwise bothered with.
#112

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

MMMM 2 Broadway shows and 4 fill in shows, Yes the price is cheap for a Subscription, but this year i will take a pass and just wait for Canstage / Sony Centre / Dancap show`s if Billy Elliot is there for a long run i dont think it would be hard to get cheaps seats for that show later on in its run. All that waiting for nothing. Is Wicked and God of Carnage going to be announced later? Or where both those shows a no go?
#113

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Sounds like there will be more off-subscription shows announced. Hopefully Wicked will be announced as part of these extra shows still to come.

From the press release on the mirvish site:

http://mirvish.com/homepagefeature/anewseason

“Outside the subscription season, we have more shows to offer Toronto theatregoers. With four theatres in downtown Toronto – the Royal Alexandra, the Princess of Wales, the Canon and the Panasonic, we have great opportunities to offer a wide variety of other shows off-subscription. In 2010-11, we already have six added shows, and the list is soon to grow. But our subscribers will have first opportunity to purchase tickets at great prices – one of the many privileges of subscribing.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Am I the only one disappointed with some of the choices for the subscription?
#116

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Yaaawwwwwwwwwwn.

The only thing that is remotely of interest to me is CALANDER GIRLS, and even then, its a play and when it was announced for the stage in the UK I was hoping it'd be a musical. The story would make a fun musical.
#117

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Not excited at all!

Sweet Charity is the only thing of interest right now...I'm wondering now what those extra shows are (besides probably Wicked and God Of Carnage).

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

I think that it's a pretty impressive lineup. The bigger shows (Billy, Priscilla, Forum) were known already, so that took away some of the thunder. I think they're offering a good range of shows, appealing to a broad range of audiences. I think it's a better balance than the current season, where the shows have been wildly uneven in their popularity and quality.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

I think it's a VERY strong line-up, one not entirely New York focused.

They will be announcing other non-subscription shows in weeks to come. IT was reported a while back that GOD OF CARNAGE was a definite although the New York producers haven't announced a tour as yet, so maybe that is holing things up there.

THE SECRET GARDEN was complete surprise. The show played the Royal Alex in 1992 (the National tour) and did all right but wasn't a sell-out. This will be a stand alone production, which seems a huge undertaking with no other engagements planned as yet.

FORUM was announced earlier, but at the Press Conference Bruce Dow and Mike Nadajewski (Hero) did "Free." Production was a huge hit at Stratford last summer and should do well for Mirvish. It's been 30 years since Toronto had a professional production.

It's been nearly as long since we last saw a professional SWEET CHARITY (although Scarborough Music Theatre is staging it in April/May this year) but I have to confess that it's never been a favourite show of mine but perhaps this new production will change that.

The show I am most looking forward to seeing is CALENDAR GIRLS, having loved the film and also my mother is a member of the WI.

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

I have a question what show will be cancelled first?
#122

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

I think Billy Elliot will be cancelled... just my feeling. They were VERY vague about all the particulars - I bet if it doesn't get cancelled outright it will be postponed to next years season to give time for the Chicago show to close.
#123

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

I hate to say it, but I think cherios is right. As much I don't want it to happen, I feel that BE will be pushed back too.
#124

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Unfortunately this is why I am reluctant to purchase a subscription to a Mirvish season. I really want Priscilla and Billy Elliot to happen but I won't believe it until they start selling tickets for it or until performances actually start.

If they cancel either one of these shows, especially Billy Elliot, they better replace it with a blockbuster show, something big.
#125

re: Mirvish 2010 / 2011

Actually, I think the show on the shakiest ground is The Secret Garden because 1) at this point it doesn't exist anywhere and 2)it sounds like the plans are dependent on the show getting off the ground elsewhere first (some say Edinburgh, some say London, Mirvish says he can't comment).

Forum is rock solid. Sweet Charity and Calendar Girls are pretty solid.

I'm pretty confident in Billy Elliot. As an organization they seem to have a pretty strong infrastructure at this point and they seem to have a solid grasp on how to find their talent. On the Mirvish end, they've been trying to work it out for a long time and doing it post-Broadway instead of pre-Broadway has removed a lot of the complications, I think. There's also Canadian actors in the Broadway cast that seem likely to transfer north.

Priscilla is slightly worrisome because even this past week the producers couldn't say anything more concrete than that it would open on Broadway "sometime" in 2011. If they think the show's financial success is dependent on New York and they have trouble finding a theatre for it, well... But I think they're more committed this time.
