Posted: 12/30/12 at 8:24pmJust make sure Lea Salonga is in the film in some form. I said this in another thread, but maybe she could play Gigi? That way we get her for at least "The Movie in My Mind." And it'd be nice to have the original Kim and the new Kim onscreen together, ala Les Miz with the Valjeans.

I could see Jeremy Jordan playing Chris. He has a great more traditional side to his voice and if they're going with live singing again they're going to need great singers. Alternatively, Aaron Tveit would be great.
As for Kim, I'd be interested to see an unknown do it. Definitely not Jenna Ushkowitz from Glee, girl does NOT have the vocal prowess necessary. I would say Jessica Sanchez, but I don't know if she can act and her voice is a little too on the dramatic (heavy) side for Kim. I feel like they'll end up going with whoever gets cast in the new revival.

It's got to be Ken Jeong- I believe the national tour video shows an Engineer who improvises wildly, almost madly, while the ensemble sings "Girls, i've got Girls, gorgeous Girls!" "We've got girls! We've got boys! We've got boys that look like girls! Come on, I'll do you!"
I don't know if that hyper Emcee was one actor's choice or a tour convention, but from the moment I saw that and heard the Engineer's part in "Morning of the Dragon" I've been convinced it's Jeong's role. That and the fact that he is convincingly half-and-half and neither full white nor full Asian, leaving him dead center in the Engineer's racial-identity struggle.

I believe I read an in-depth interview of Jackie Chan a few years ago in which he described his training as a child in Chinese Opera. From what he described, in addition to the strict instruction in dance and martial arts it was also a multi-discipline style training which would suggest that he has the chops for the Engineer (his performance in Mulan also would deem him appropriate).
I would think that the studio would want either him or Wattanabe in order to have someone with a high enough "Q" rating in the mix.

darquegk: Was that Jon Jon Briones you saw in the National Tour video? He's my favorite Engineer!
I'm confused though, I thought that Ken Jeong was fully Korean? I definitely agree that the Engineer needs to be able to improvise comedy. Even Pryce added in some lines, like "Men pay a lot for virgin ass."
Wikipedia reveals that he has an MD and studied internal medicine. Huh.

Shouldn't Chris be Aaron Tveit?
I agree thast Kim needs to be a young unknown, and the Engineer needs to be an actual Asian.

Posted: 12/31/12 at 11:22amI'm not sure if Aaron Tveit has the star power yet, although I would love for him to be cast in the role. But you have to remember that if Kim is going to be an unknown, they're going to have to make it up by putting names in the other roles.

Benjamin Walker could play Chris. I could see Anne Hathaway as Ellen.
Any reason the Engineer has to be male? Maybe Margaret Cho?

Lea Salonga as Gigi
Jamie Foxx/Usher as John
Unknown/Charice as Kim (Charice will make the movie a HUGE box office draw)

Yeah, according to the Making of Miss Saigon book he added that line. They must have liked it so much that they made it official.

Justin Timberlake, Chris Evans or Matt Bomer for Chris. Chris Pine could work too.
Hugh Jackman needs to stay away from this.
Any unknown for Kim

I just double-checked to make sure that I didn't hallucinate or have a false memory and it's on page 169 of the book. I always assumed that was the line used for the West End production, did they change it to "Men pay the moon" before then?
Can Chris Pine sing? Looks and acting wise he'd be good.
Since we're talking about an unknown for Kim, what about Jacqueline Nguyen, who just played the role in the La Mirada production? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WTqqOXINVE
