I'm not ususally up for the all star casts, but this movie should be. Just like the original it is over the top and campy and should be packed to the brim with stars. Here's my thoughts:
Tracy- Kathy Brier - she's fantastic and a name
Edna- John Travolta - he really would be great - different, of course, but no one could say he wouldn't be great - Harvey on stage is a big star, but is a lesser star in film and that part is written specifically for a huge star
Wilbur - David Bowie
Amber - Paris Hilton lipsyncing to Christina Aguilera
Link- Justin Timberlake - perfect
Velma - Have Debrah Harry reprise her role!!!! Or Courtney Love for a younger mother... Meryl Streep would be great - she sings really well
Seaweed - Usher - he can sing, dance, act - he's fantastic - that would be a smart move
Motermouth - Patti Labelle
Penny - who knows? an unknown, because no one famous that I can think of could do it justice

Posted: 3/4/05 at 9:11pmA 30 year old passing for a 17 year old on stage where they will be viewed from hundreds of feet away is absolutely nothing like a 38 year old playing a 17 year old 40 feet high and 20 feet back.

like the cast of Greease were teenagers? please they all looked 30! Ive come to the conclusion that its ok if teenagers arent played by teenagers, as long as all the characters look the *same age* --- whatever age that might be...

Have you ever seen Fristin Chenowyth on the West Wing she still looks and sound like a teenager, with the hair and clothes for Hairspray she could definitly pull off Amber.
Kathy Brier on the other hand looks ancient on tv. Marissa still plays a teenager in every teen movie ever so why can't she be in Hairspray. Anyway, she deserves the boost in her film career.
Travolta as Edna makes me wanna vomit. He's not even fat. I think Harvey is great enough to do the movie. I don't know. I'm a huge fan of the original movie so they better do it right.

There are a lot of good ideas here I think. Here is my dream cast...
Edna-Harvey of course. I think Travolta could pull it off, but he would be nowhere near as good as Harvey would be.
Tracey-I think they should find an unknown. It really is a role that could launch a young talented girl's career.
Wilber-Joel Grey would be good but I don't really have a preference on this role
Penny-Kerry Butler was so good and I think she would be wonderful on screen.
Velma-I really like the idea of Meryl Streep. She has a good voice and she is my favorite living movie actress.
Amber-I like the Lohan idea. She is huge right now and would bring in loads of people. Plus the role is right about the level of Lohan's acting skills and if they get her vocal training I think she could pull off the singing.
Authority figure-Of course Jackie Hoffman would be brillian once again and I would hate to see anyone else play those parts. However, if for some reason she doesnt want to do it or the studio doesnt want her, I think Ana Gasteyer would be hilarious. Lily Tomlin would be really good too.
Seaweed-I guess Usher would be good. I'm not his biggest fan, but since I can't think of anyone better I guess he will be ok
Motormouth-Either Patti Labell of Aretha would be nothing short of amazing in that role. I would LOVE to hear either one of them sing Big Blond and Beautiful and I Know Where I've been.
Link-What about someone like John Mayer? I don't really know if he can act, but he has a good voice and has that heart-throb look.
Corny Collins-Um...I can't really think of anyone right now, but the role isn't that hard-so I don't care if they use some weird stunt casting here

Wow.. there is so many people you could choose for these roles--
Tracy- Carly Jibson
Edna- John Travolta (Vinnie Barbino as Edna Turbald... gotta see that!)
Wilbur- The dad from Frasier if he can sing
Link- Jesse McCartney (he's 17 plus he did King and I tour so he has Bway like experience)
Amber- Lindsay Lohan... or maybe Hilary Duff if she did some singing lessons or something.
Velma- Megan Mullay- I love her and her singing Baltimore Crabs would kill me!
Seaweed- Usher, he would be the perfect choice
Penny- Kerry Butler, I feel she is the only one who could it justice. or maybe that Kristin Bell girl from Veronica Mars?
Prudy- Ana Gastyer or Molly Shannon?
Corny Collins- Peter Gallagher from The OC, I loved him in Guys and Dolls... he would do awesome as Corny!
MotorMouth- Queen Latifah
Little Arnez- Raven Symone

So Does this mean being screen tested will be:
Marissa Jaret Winokur, Katy Grenfell, Kathy Brier, Shoshana Bean, Shannon Durig, Carly Jibson, Kaela Settle, and Katrina Rose Diderikson? Anyothers?
#62re: More 'Hairspray' movie news
Posted: 3/5/05 at 2:02pmNo. I don't think they mean understudies. They would never screentest Shoshana.

Ewan Macgregor as Corny? He's got that "charm" that makes him good for the part. He sang in Moulin Rouge, also. Why not? Oh, and if they get Travolta, who cares if he isn't fat because they can always put a fat suit on him. I like the idea of Billy Crystal as Wilbur, but I want to see him on stage as Max in the Producers.
From what I've seen on TV's Simple Life, Paris has more of a ditzy "Penny" attitude. I don't think she's right for the movie, though.

Sad to say that none of my cast is exactly groundbreaking, but...
Tracy - Vanessa Olivarez with Carly Jibson as a close second
Link - Nick Lachey, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling, Freddy Prinze Jr., ...all good.... a long shot - an unknown like Gavin Creel or Cheyanne Jackson or even Matt Morrison, but none of those are likely
Edna - John Travolta
Wilbur - Billy Crystal
Corny Collins - (ideally, typecasting - Ryan Seacrest) in reality - somebody extremely cheezy a la Ryan Seacrest
Motormouth - Aretha, Queen Latifah
Seaweed - I would love to see Corey Renyolds again, but Usher is
more a better choice for the big screen
Penny - suprise me
Female Authority Figure - Jackie Hoffman or Lily Tomlin (although a great cameo for Ricki Lake would be one of these characters)
Male Authority Figure - Eugene Levy
The Vontussels
Combo A - Megan Mullally and Lindsay Lohan
Combo B - Amy Poehler and hilary Duff
MY Combo (although they dont look alike... Lindsay and Amy)

Not the most major of characters, and I absolutely adore Jackie Hoffman in the roll of the Female Authority Figure...
BUT, I would love to see Mindy Sterling take on the part. She's probably best known for her work in the Austin Powers movies as Frau Farbissina - she's a great character actress and extremely talented improviser. She's my vote for a "name" even if she's not that well known.

Posted: 3/8/05 at 7:12pmI don't really have time to read through this whole topic, but... My personal favorite Tracy was Shannon Durig. I think that's her name. She was awesome, and I liked her a lot. And, Harvey as Edna is a necessity (even if I can't spell the word).

Mindy Sterling is a great idea, I could see her as either the Matron or the Gym Teacher. One question, though... do you think the producers will break up the Authority Figure roles so different actors would play all of the different characters? Dual roles make sense on stage... it saves on casting, these roles seem like ones that would make great cameos.
Also, I agree with Hilary Duff as Amber, I've seen SOME of her works and she just strikes me as someone that would make a good Amber... just a thought, though.

Posted: 3/8/05 at 7:20pmHoly cow... Someone said Queen Latifah as Motormouth? That, quite frankly, seems like the perfect choice. She has a big strong voice, and can act. Wow. Smart thinking to whoever said that!

Posted: 3/8/05 at 7:49pmAfter seeing Hairspray twice on Broadway with the original cast, I had always said that I couldn't imagine anyone except Harvey portraying Edna Turnblad....however I had to eat my words recently. Just 2 weeks ago I saw the Hairspray tour in Atlanta with John Pinette in the role of Edna. I was skeptical of seeing someone else feel those shoes, but I was blown away. He took a totally different approach to Edna and I loved it. Where Harvey's Edna was loud and brash, John's Edna was a little bit more subdued and timid. I loved both Harvey and John's portrayal. So, I'm a little bit more open to the idea of someone else playing Edna in the film...however I DO NOT think Travolta is the man that should do it.
