Posted: 5/19/14 at 10:55amSo, I was looking for internships on the Dreamworks Animation website just for fun and I noticed that one of the internships is involvement with developing SEVERAL Broadway shows. Do any of you have inside scoop of what movies they have in mind? I hope that PRINCE OF EGYPT is one of them. A stage adaption of that is long overdue.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
Sorry for the immaturity, but really: How can that not be a Broadway musical?

Devonian, you were right:
Then there are ongoing meetings and discussions about a possible movie of "Pippin" and a possible movie of "Wicked," and also DreamWorks has been talking to me about developing a stage version of "The Prince of Egypt." So it's a lot to juggle.

Posted: 2/14/15 at 11:48amI don't know how they'd make The Prince of Egypt work because one of the things I love most in that score is Deliver Us and it's not easy to support a big cast like that. If it could find an audience I think it'd be worth pursuing but Dreamworks Animation is on very shaky ground so I can't see them launching a big Broadway show right now.

Given DWA isn't doing so hot at the moment, I imagine any Broadway musicals are on hold until the films start doing well again, The Prince of Egypt would be the most obvious to do, the other films don't really lend themselves to being adapted for the stage although I've always thought something like Kung Fu Panda would work maybe not as a musical but a stage arena show using Chinese theatre as inspiration similar to Damon Albarn's Monkey: Journey to the West.

Posted: 2/14/15 at 7:34pmWhy would the state of Dreamworks animation have anything to do with a mounting of a new stage musical? Isn't the companies theatrical division Dreamworks Theatrical under a separate umbrella (ala Disney Theatrical.)

Posted: 2/14/15 at 8:39pmDreamWorks Animation is much smaller that Disney and whereas Disney can weather a flop due to profits made elsewhere like ESPN, Marvel etc DWA can't and they've written off four of their last six films and had to shut down PDI which was one of their studios. They've tried diversifying with TV shows, online and live entertainment but its little too late.

I'd love to see them do How to Train Your Dragon. They could combine HTTYD 1 & 2. The flying sequences could get expensive, but they could probably use the same methods that Disneyland uses in its live Aladdin show. An overhead aerial battle would be awesome! I'd love to see Gerard Butler reprise his role as "Stoick the Vast," but fortunately, he doesn't look the part.

Posted: 2/15/15 at 12:54amThey've been touring How to Train Your Dragon as a huge arena spectacular show. I can't help but feel that it would be a bit of a step down for them to put that into the restraints of a more traditional proscenium theatre.

Honestly none of their titles SCREAM musical adaptation to me.
Have their films done that poorly? I mean Rio is a mess. But I did't think they were in the red.

Posted: 2/15/15 at 4:54pmI think Kung Fu Panda could be very interesting if done more in Chinese traditional style instead of the cartoon-y look. I know Franco Dragone (La Reve in Vegas, House of Dancing Waters in Macau) was directing an arena tour of the show with a traditional Chinese/acrobatic vibe to it but it eventually fell through for some unknown reason. Soon after they announced the How To Train Your Dragon tour.
