I thought Dan Fogler deserved the Tony. He's brilliant.
I can't emphasize my love of Celia or Kelli enough. Those two wonderfully talented ladies deserve something for their amazing work in their respective shows.

I agree with you HeyMrMusic...this is probably Dan's only chance.
Celia and Kelli are both great...it's so funny to think of what would've happened if Celia were not in Spelling Bee and stayed in Piazza...hmmmm...how would the awards have gone THEN?

Haha. That would be interesting.
I'm glad they were both recognized, though.

One of the times I saw Piazza, I saw Celia outside after the show with a boy . . . I thought it was cool that she was maybe going in to chat with some of her old friends :)
Now as for Kelli over Sara Ramirez . . . I mean I'm obsessed with Kelli's performance in Piazza, but do you guys think she deserved it over Sara?
I don't . . . Sara's performance is such a wonderful star turn, whereas Kelli, although she plays a very complex and beautiful character, comes across ultimately as a standard ingenue, which she indeed is.
I haven't even seen Spamalot but I am so glad Sara won . . . it means the beginning of a wonderful career for her, and will help her immensely, whereas I believe Kelli will continue to score lots of roles simply because she is the best beautiful blonde young colatura soprano around.
Ya know?

Pinguin, you have said some really rude and inconsiderate things - just because you're a fan of Piazza doesn't mean you should lose the ability to be objective.
I myself am a huge fan of several of the shows, but when it comes down to it, I can admit that perhaps someone else gave a better performance than someone from one of my faves.
Have you even seen Spelling Bee to be dissin' Dan Fogler the way you are? To say he didn't deserve it or what get another chance?
It was honestly one of the most amazing performances I've ever been witness to and I'm a little offended that you're saying he didn't deserve it when I felt he was on the top of the list as one of the most deserving. This is not to say that the others in his category were losers or not talented, I just thought that he was very fortunate to be in a role that truly showed off his strengths and the extent of his abilities, and he shone a bit brighter than his competitors in this role.
I am also a huuuuuge fan of Matthew Morrison, but having seen both shows, it's just obvious which was truly a standout. Matthew Morrison isn't goin' anywhere (except perhaps Hollywood...boo...) and I have no doubt will garnish many more nominations, and have many more roles that show us even further what he is capable of. Until that time, why must you say that someone else did not deserve the award? Perhaps it just wasn't his turn yet.

WHOA.
Calm down fella.
I think that Dan Folger is a great performer but his talents are very particular: for one, he's not a singer, but a very talented oddball sort of actor, so not the type of person who would normally get cast in a musical, AKA the kind of person who's probably not likely to be nominated in a show again for a musical acting award.
That's not rude or not objective...in fact it's quite objective.
I have seen all 4 of the shows nominated for best musical, actually. And Spelling Bee was my second favorite. And of course I would LIKED to have seen Matt win but I don't think it was his year. You're just taking my comments the wrong way, I'm sorry that you got so upset.
Of course Dan DESERVED the Tony. It's not about that. I have said very plainly that I'm happy for him and I liked his performance.

Posted: 6/9/05 at 9:34pmI do think Yazbek's score was indeed silly, but I liked it because of the diversity. Like "Love Is My Legs" and "Oklahoma?" and "GBS" are completely different. And "Nothing Is Too Wonderful to be True" is a really nice song. I just felt especially bad because it sounded like he got Mel Brooksed in '01, and I wouldve liked to see him win it this year.

Posted: 6/9/05 at 9:36pmYazbek has done two shows with two great scores. IMHO TFM was better than The producers.

Posted: 6/9/05 at 9:51pmand in my opinion Jane Eyre had a better score than Monty and The Producers, but still Yazbeck is deserving of a Tony and I really thought this would be his year. but, alas, I adore Piazza. I would have never been able to chose...

Posted: 6/9/05 at 10:29pmMatt, Kelli & Piazza should have respectively won for Feat Actor, Feat Actress & Musical. DRS deserved the one award. Spamalot did not deserve Musical.

I saw DRS, Spamalot, and Spelling Bee (I have only listened to Piazza's score). The only major awards I would have changed were Best Director to James Lapine and Best Actor to anyone else (I found Norbert Butz's performance to be grating). I might have given best musical to Piazza if I had seen it. Of the three I had seen Spamalot definitely deserved Best Musical. It was the most complete musical of the bunch. Spelling Bee was dominated by its book (while I enjoyed the score on its own, I sometimes found it to be intrusive and awkward in the context of the play) and DRS was a 2nd rate show all around (particularly its score) compared to the other two (and I assume Piazza was beter than DRS too). If I had had my way, DRS would have won nothing.
The play categories were the ones that needed major fixing. Michael Stuhlbarg for Best Featured Actor, Twelve Angry Men for Best Revival of a Play, and the guy who directed The Pillowman for Best Director.
