I started this thread, because I messed up on the "powerful love song" one (I overlooked the "love" modifier and had started to post this...)
My choice: "Molasses to Rum", from 1776, especially as sung by James Barbour.

I'm Still Here
LOL, the "no love here" made me smile.
My top choices in order of preference are:
1. "Lot's Wife"-CAROLINE, OR CHANGE
2. "Rose's Turn"-GYPSY
3. "I'm Still Here"-FOLLIES
4. "Surabaya Johnny"-HAPPY END
5. "Epiphany"-SWEENEY TODD
6. "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught"-SOUTH PACIFIC

ray, thanks :) Making people smile is one of my favorite things
Ummm...Sweeney Todd songs...I guess I skipped over those.
But, I stick with my original! (if nothing else, it IS emotionally charged!)
"Being Alive" from COMPANY, especially as sung by my favorite of all Bobbys, Larry Kert
also, "The Impossible Dream" from MAN OF LA MANCHA
and Ol' Man River" from SHOW BOAT, especially in a magnificent definitive performance by William Warfield in the 1951 film version.
All those previously mentioned, plus "And I Am Telling You" from Dreamgirls. It was posted on the love thread, but I really don't think it's much of a love song at its heart at all.
Also,
"I Dreamed a Dream," Les Mis
"Nobody Needs to Know," The Last Five Years
"Beautiful Girls," Follies (since there was no rule about being a solo)
"Let the Sun Shine In," Hair (ditto)
And I AM Telling You- Dreamgirls
Rose's Turn- Gypsy
When there's No One- Carrie
Don't Cry for me Argentina- Evita
I'll go with some Wildhorn & Lloyd Webber "classics"?! And others.
"Into the Fire" - Scarlet Pimpernel
"This is the Moment" - Jekyll & Hyde
"A New Life" - Jekyll & Hyde
"Gold" - Camille Claudel
"All for Laura" - Woman in White
"Superstar" - Jesus Christ Superstar (?Maybe?)
"As If We Never Said Goodbye" - Sunset Boulevard
"With One Look" - Sunset Boulevard
"I'd Give My Life for You" - Miss Saigon

"When There's No One" or "And Eve Was Weak" from Carrie
"Epiphany" from Sweeney Todd
"Seasons of Love" from RENT
"Easy to Be Hard" from Hair
"Defying Gravity" from Wicked
"Being Alive" from Company
Several songs from Ragtime, including New Music, Wheels of a Dream, Back to Before and Make Them Hear You.

Several of these have just thrilled me. Such great songs especially the Wildhorn and Webber ones!
Jackson, don't you have a hole somewhere to crawl back into?
And I totally forgot Easy To Be Hard. Definitely belongs on the list.

"Molasses to Rum" immediately came to mind.
And Paul Robeson's definitive "O'l Man River" in the 1936 Show Boat
"My Death" in Jacques Brel is Alive and Well...
"Pirate Jenny" in Threepenny Opera
"The Barbara Song" Threepenny Opera
"Army Song" Threepenny Opera
"They Call the Wind Maria" Paint Your Wagon
"Till We Reach That Day" - Ragtime. It brings tears to my eyes every single time, without fail.
"I'm Here" - The Color Purple. Jeanette Bayardelle...that's all I'm gonna say.
"Before The Parade Passes By" - Hello, Dolly. Carol Channing reaches into your soul when she does that number.
EDIT: "I Know Where I've Been" Don't even ask me how I forgot this one.
