I started this thread, because I messed up on the "powerful love song" one Most powerful (just powerful, no love here) Broadway song. (I overlooked the "love" modifier and had started to post this...)

My choice: "Molasses to Rum", from 1776, especially as sung by James Barbour.

3. "I'm Still Here"-FOLLIES

ray, thanks :) Making people smile is one of my favorite things re: Most powerful (just powerful, no love here) Broadway song.
Ummm...Sweeney Todd songs...I guess I skipped over those.

But, I stick with my original! (if nothing else, it IS emotionally charged!)

"Being Alive" from COMPANY, especially as sung by my favorite of all Bobbys, Larry Kert
also, "The Impossible Dream" from MAN OF LA MANCHA
and Ol' Man River" from SHOW BOAT, especially in a magnificent definitive performance by William Warfield in the 1951 film version.

All those previously mentioned, plus "And I Am Telling You" from Dreamgirls. It was posted on the love thread, but I really don't think it's much of a love song at its heart at all.

Also,

"I Dreamed a Dream," Les Mis
"Nobody Needs to Know," The Last Five Years
"Beautiful Girls," Follies (since there was no rule about being a solo)
"Let the Sun Shine In," Hair (ditto)

Jackson, don't you have a hole somewhere to crawl back into?

And I totally forgot Easy To Be Hard. Definitely belongs on the list.

"Till We Reach That Day" - Ragtime. It brings tears to my eyes every single time, without fail.

"I'm Here" - The Color Purple. Jeanette Bayardelle...that's all I'm gonna say.

"Before The Parade Passes By" - Hello, Dolly. Carol Channing reaches into your soul when she does that number.

EDIT: "I Know Where I've Been" Don't even ask me how I forgot this one. Updated On: 5/17/08 at 04:55 AM

Post reading your choices...

I forgot about>> "This is The Moment" (J&H)
and>>"Superstar" (JCS) .........Phylly03, I think this one does qualify as a strong statement song (no "?" needed re: Most powerful (just powerful, no love here) Broadway song. )

BUT, still stick to my original choice (that is a powerful song)!

OH, and scott68, be nice, jackson992 is new around here, so show some HOSPITALITY!
