Most Likely Nominees for Best Musical at the TONY's — Page 3

"Charlie, you must be having a ****fit now that your despised Billys are up for a Best Actor tony."
Wrong. I'm glad it's for "Best Actor".. that means they have no chance of winning! And I'd rather they be nominated for this, then to receive a Special Tony. So, in fact, I got what I wanted!! Hooray.
Don't you love it when things go your way?

I'd love to know which electrifying performance by an Actor in a Musical is going to defeat the Billy Elliot kids. Matt Cavenaugh? Oliver Platt or Craig Bierko? Brian D'Arcy James? Matthew Risch? Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen? James Barbour? Gavin Creel or Will Swenson? Stephen Bogardus or Jeffry Denman? Will Chase or Malcolm Gets? Constantine Maroulis? The bar mitzvah kid from 13?
I think the Billy Elliots have it in the bag.

and then there's (fill in the blanks).
I think this is far and away, the best new musical to come along in years, hands down.
"Go Billy!"

No way in hell.
The kids can dance.. but their acting and singing is repulsive.
I commend them for working so hard and I understand how tiring the role is (I've seen BE) but that's show business, folks.
Why should they be awarded because they can dance really well maybe 3 or 4 times a week?
Until I see the nominations, I have no opinion on who SHOULD win it... just who shouldn't. I know that kids who can dance (but fail to sing or act well) shouldn't be winning such a prized honor.

And I would wait a little while before being so sure about the Tony nominees...
Just don't be too sure yet....

Pianolin717,
I’ve been in the real world.
Ok, let’s nip this one on the bud.
There are no plans to re-open the show on Broadway. Yes I have read the posts – they are nothing more than the musings of a rabid fan wishing the production into existence.
Look at the show’s grosses:
https://www.broadwayworld.com/grossesshow.cfm?show=TITLE%20OF%20SHOW
Most weeks it didn’t even meet it’s basic operating costs. Assuming – even with reduced theatre rent and royalty concessions – the weekly break-even to be $150K the show was significantly below that figure 5 weeks in a row starting w/o Sep 7 with only an uptake the last 2 weeks when the show was closing and fans were rushing to see it one last time. If the grosses had been as high as they were that final week throughout the run the show would still be open.
I sometimes think shows like this should be announced as a limited engagement with an option to extend if demand warrants, similar to Roundabout’s programming.
The best anyone could hope for is a regional production. I can see this show doing well in limited runs in regionals (as with LAST 5 YEARS or A NEW BRAIN.)
But let's stop all these fake rumours about the show re-opening. That just gets people's hopes up and it's not going to happen.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Spring Awakening won Best Choreography in 2007, not Legally Blonde.

I highly doubt [tos] will reopen. Maybe if the economy didn't fall apart the way it did, it would but at this point, it's a longshot to reopen to say the least. And if they do reopen, it's a really stupid move on their part unless they reopen in a small Off-Broadway venue. I just really don't think [tos] will get a Best Musical nod.
This year especially, the nominating committee are going to want to recognize shows that are still up and running with nominations to bring in the bucks.

I disagree with fanadu1996! Im praying FOR [tos] to get nominated.
Its to damn good not to be nominated.

"When you know you can't have what you want, where's the profit in wishing?"
Seriously. I have been covering Broadway for 30 years. Only once did s flop show announce it would re-open. To be fair it almost did. The show was David Merrick's revival of OH, KAY!
The show opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre November 1, 1990 was trashed by the critics and closed January 5, 1991. Merrick issued a statement (when wasn't that man issuing statements?) saying the production would lay off for the winter and reopen in the spring. It began previews at the Lunt-Fontanne April 2, 1991, and closed in previews April 14, 1991.
EVERY time a flop show close there is always some nimrod that tries to start rumors that it will reopen. I remember the rumours about SIDE SHOW reopening, fueled by small but vocal Internet group known as The Freaks, and the producers did leave the set in the theatre several months after they closed (though with no imminent booking the theatre owners didn't seem to care.) In the end business sense prevailed and the show did not reopen.
As far as I can tell, no flop show has ever closed then reopened and suddenly found an audience.

They also said that the only "hat" that they do not wear is the producing hat, and I may be imagining it, but I think they hinted that it might be possible for it to come down to them producing it themselves for a brief reopening, or at least that is an option they can explore a little bit. So that's where it's at, as of last Sunday, on the possibility of the show coming back.

Seriously? It was virtually universally praised by all critics down there for finding its voice and footing. And everyone I talked with (both those who saw it here AND there as well as Arena-only people) in person (meaning they actually saw it and weren't going by boots or holding on to their old favorites and going by hear-say) loved it. The changes MAKE the show.
And I agree that there is DEFINITELY time. It's not like they will have to do a lot of tweaking to the show. And the set is not that complicated. Wow...no real mechanical things other than a couple of walls on pulleys. Even the "eye doors" are person-operated.
Maybe it couldn't win musical... But it would DEFINITELY throw a monkey wrench into especially the Best Actress category.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!
