Thanks, WonderBoy.
I wasn't in the show myself... but I really didn't need to be to get the point of CATS.
Considering that it ran for just a little bit, I'm guessing we're not the only ones who feel it wasn't pointless.
I'd like to add that I didn't post the link to the Websters dictionary definition of "pointless" just to be cute. (Sometimes we ALL need to look words up, and if you feel you don't, then I'm truly sorry for you.)
There are two definitions of "pointless," and WonderBoy and I (and many others) are taking it for its first definition listed which is "meaningless" or "lacking meaning, purpose or point."
The second definition is "without impact" or "lacking impact."
So while I would agree that CATS definitely has an intended meaning & purpose, whether "gotten" or not, it may have lacked "impact" for the people who saw it. I can't argue with that. I just don't happen to feel that way, personally. But I wouldn't fault others who do.
I really don't see much point to Cats, except for T.S.Eliot's pre-set message like somebody else mentioned. Hal Prince actually said that Andrew Lloyd Webber told him not to look for subtext, the show is about cats!!!! Soooo pointless!
i agree with the very first one mentioned - mama mia
Okay, well in case of this post, I would think the definition followed more the lines of "Lack of impact."
Thoroughly Modern Millie, Thoroughly boring and pointless.

One of my first posts and I already manage to make some one angry! Sorry if I insulted any of the very devoted cats fans/alumni out there.
To everyone who said CATS....i agre 1000000% that was pointless. Ok so I havent see nSpamalot but I dont think it is pointless...the point is to be funny and it is (i love monty python adn the holy grail)...and grease i agree with too
First of all, I enjoyed Spamalot, and while I liked Dirty Rotten Scoundrels more, I think Spamalot deserved that Tony.
Second, I thought Smokey Joe's Cafe was pointless (partly because I fell asleep in it)

If something is a hit, it is entertaining thousands of theatre goers - and that means it can't be considered pointless, at least in my book.
Amen, DGRant!
I guess no one really clarified the original question. I took a "pointless musical" as a statement on its existence, not its content. How can Spamalot be pointless? It is a comedy with a built-in audience of Monty Python fans, therefore it has a point. On the Record was the first show produced by Disney strictly as a revue of beloved songs from Disney films. Once again, a built-in audience of Disney fans. Yes, it was completely misconceived and suffered the consequences, but it had a point and the idea of a Disney song review is not a bad one. Mamma Mia....the song catalogue of the biggest pop group in the world. Whether or not it was a book show is moot. The point of the show is quite clear (and yes, the story has a point as well, like it or not). Thoroughly Modern Millie was a so-so musical film that was vastly improved in its stage transfer featuring that American musical theatre favorite....tap dancing! Point. Now as for Brooklyn, well, I guess the point was to feature new material and new artists. Otherwise, I don't really know why producers sunk money into a Broadway production.
