"rent2
n.
*An opening made by rending; a rip.
*A breach of relations between persons or groups; a rift."
Again, it wasn't my idea. I explained to my friend that it has multiple meanings, but she only took it at face value.
Hence the shrug.

I have to say Bye Bye Birdie. I'm doing the show now, and Conrad has, what, twenty lines and a few songs? He really has such an insignificant time on stage, and though he's what everything focuses around, it's really about Albert and Rosie.

That is true, wickedrentq, although Gigi does refer to Kim, the main character, as "Miss Saigon."
Actually in a production of Fiddler I was in...the Fiddler was onstage quite a bit..a pressence in many of the scenes..especially Tevye's monologues. And danced a drunken Tevye home from the bar after L'Chaim, as he runs into the constable, who scares the Fiddler away.

I agree with Link Larkin Wannabe, In a production I did last summer, the Fiddler was featured in many scenes with no dialouge but still there to represent the tradition and how it never is far from Tevye.

The Woman in White is a large part of the story, but a smaller role in the actual show.

"You know the real name of this show is Vera. The only reason they changed the name was because Jerry Herman couldn't think of a rhyme for it. Steve Sondheim could have"

How about INTO THE WOODS?
Hehe... I was in a production of this way back when, and since they had more actors than they had roles, they cast a "chorus" of dancing trees. (Don't ask; it was high school.) So, unless you consider significance in terms of metaphor (like FIDDLER), I'd say that our title characters were by far the least significant. :)

Ah, true Colle. I was pushing that one a little, since Miss Saigon as the title is really supposed to refer to Kim.
I think in JCS Jesus isnt as big a role as Judas imo. It would seem as if Judas is the show.
Marguerite - Bea said that at a roast/tribute of Jerry Herman. I don't think she was serious.
"I always thought Aida is more about Amneris than Aida. Not to say the role is small. "
Have you not seen the show? Aida is very much about Aida.
the beast in beauty and the beast, compare his songs/ role to say.. gaston and you'll see what i mean

Most of you are naming roles with very little stage time, but whom the entire show revolves around, (i.e. The Mikado) or someone who has a lot of time but does not seem to be the MAIN character. (Aida, Jesus)
A truly less-than significant title role is one I have played, that of Rocky Horror in The Rocky Horror Show. The plot wouldn't change much, or at all if Frank was planning on making him a couple weeks after Brad and Janet showed up.

The Drowsy Chaperone was a name that was used because it was easy to forget especially because the drowsy chaperone wasn't the main character, said Bob Martin.

I always thought Aida is more about Amneris than Aida. Not to say the role is small.
I also think JCS is more about Judas than Jesus.
I don't think JCS is necessarily "more about" Judas, but the story is definitely told more from Judas's perspective. The role of Jesus is by no means "insignificant," though.
However, Aida's story both revolves around the title character and is HER story, not Amneris's.

It's not a person, but what about Carousel? Other than that being where the main characters meet, and the basic metaphor of the cycle of abuse, what significance does it even have in the show? I wouldn't even say it's the best metaphor they could have come up with...
Same thing goes with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - the show is more about the people than the car (well, it SHOULD be at any rate).
Damn Yankees -- the team in the show is the Senators. The hatred of the Yankees causes Joe to make his deal, but that's where their significance pretty much ends.
It's called Aida for a reason, but I get why you think that.

That's odd...Wonder why he wanted a title that people would forget...That makes no sense.
