It’s crazy how many of these shows I had forgotten about as well. For example, I completely forgot Magic Mike was trying to be a musical. That one’s development was all over the place

2 1/2 years later and the only musical discussed in this thread that will have made it to Broadway is Beaches this spring.
But that gives hope to the others! It sounds like The Devil Wears Prada and Griswold’s Broadway Vacation will be arriving soon, too.
More musicals to add to this thread for archival’s sake:
Paper Mill Playhouse: Take the Lead
McCarter: Empire Records
Arena: A Wrinkle in Time
Ogunquit: My Best Friend’s Wedding
La Jolla: Working Girl
Alliance: The Preacher’s Wife, Millions

I'll give you the legendary one, which seems to have not been mentioned yet: "Lolita my Love," which adapted both the novel AND the Kubrick film, and which crashed and burned in tryouts.
A revised version was presented at a small scale decades later (with a new framing device of Humbert talking to his prison social worker as opposed to narrating to the audience), and was much better received, but still never made the leap.

Adding to the list:
Robin and the 7 Hoods - Old Globe San Diego
Note: in the last year, the UK has had musical adaptation of 50 First Dates and 13 Going on 30 (neither in a "west end" theatre, although 50 First Dates was in London)
This does seem like a ripe topic for a "Not Since Carrie" book.

The UK also had “Austenland” last year, but I’m not sure if that was based more on the novel or the film.
Also forgot to mention:
UK: Burlesque, But I’m a Cheerleader
Roundabout/Theatre Latte Da: Scotland, PA
St. Ann’s Warehouse: Monsoon Wedding
BAM/Signature Theater: Safety Not Guaranteed

Scotland, PA was supposed to do its (latest) Pre-Broadway run in Pittsburgh this past spring, but it got cancelled.

Roman Holiday had good sets, nice cast, just had no reason for being a musical since it really has no plot, just incidents. It had no energy on stage, and the cast was trying very hard. Not offensive, just no life.

Im still at a loss that Witches Of Eastwick never made it to Broadway, four insanely central characters that all get many moments to shine. A near perfect score and a hell of a lot of fun. one of strangest decisions ever by Cam Mac.

Don't forget Martin Guerre!
Encores! should do one didn't-make-it-to-Broadway show a season. Just for fun.
