Movies That Should Be Adapted Into Musicals

AEA AGMA SM said: "It has been done. LaChiusa adapted the Schnitzler play (which the film is based on) into Hello Again in 1994. It was also adapted by David Hare as The Blue Room which ran on Broadway in the late 90s starring Nicole Kidman. These are just two of numerous adaptations of the piece. "

Oh wow, I didn't even realize!

Think of the head ape Cornelius belting out a Wildhorn power ballad. Would see it in a heartbeat.

That's exactly who Nathan would be playing.

Steven Paquale is of course playing George Taylor

Kelli O'Hara is Zira

and

Courtney Reed is Nova

" I know she is mute, but you dont hire Courtney Reed to be MUTE. They can let her speak, or at least sing to us, in her head, in her world!

I will never support a Planet of the Apes musical if it does not include this:

My first two answers will always be Heart and Souls and Too Many Crooks (or perhaps its remake, Ruthless People).

Also:

Wings of Desire (not the awful American remake)

All About My Mother (Tesori, perhaps?)

La Comunidad

The Devil's Backbone

Les Choristes

Bedazzled (Laura Benanti as The Devil, Santino Fontana as Elliot, Elizabeth Stanley as Alison)

Haunted Honeymoon

Practical Magic

The Warriors

Weird Science

Defending Your Life

Ruthless People

Mrs. Doubtfire (Norbert Leo Butz!)

Moonstruck (Stephanie J Block, Josh Segura?)

Death Becomes Her

High Anxiety (Mel Brooks REALLY needs to do this before he goes)

What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?

Troop Beverley Hills (Sherie Rene Scott or Rachel York)

The Prince of Egypt

Hercules

Hocus Pocus (Everyday Rapture Reunion w/ Sherie Rene & the Mennonettes?)

More in the vein of Crazy for You/An American in Paris w/ 1 or 2 composers music

Summerstock (add to the films soundtrack with songs from Arlen and Warren's library)

There's No Business Like Show Business (Berlin)

It's Always Fair Weather (Comden and Green)

For the Boys (I don't know who to use. I'd say write an original score but the set piece of the comedy bit leading into Stuff Like That There and the blackout with Dixie singing PS I Love You right into finishing StuffLTT and all of the scene work that precedes, intermingles, and follows it is perfection and encapsulates the characters, period, and story so perfectly it's hard to imagine finding better music. Perhaps it's best to leave it alone)

From TV Rather Than Film

Soap

Pushing Daisies

Plays w/ Music

I Could Go On Singing

Valley of the Dolls

Postcards From the Edge

Operas

Watchmen

The Godfather

The Exorcist

Carrie

The Shining

There Will Be Blood

Inception

A musical of "For the Boys," adapted by Aaron Thielen and Terry James, was done several years ago in Chicago but never went anywhere. Although both "Tootsie" and "Mrs. Doubtfire" seem like good ideas, they share the technical problem of the lead having to get into and out of drag all night that's extravagant enough that you believe they're unrecognizable to family and friends. Very tricky. I think "Pocketful of Miracles" would make a good musical.

Just watched A Matter of Life and Death again last night. It would make a spectacular musical. I think Carter Burwell would compose a gorgeous score for it.
