Every time I've seen Grease on stage, I cringe at how awful it is. The film is way better.
All of the Disney shows are better on film, obviously.
On some levels, I prefer the film version of Chicago too.

I agree with The Sound of Music. And I prefer the movie West Side Story to the stage show, but I think that mostly that's because of the changes made in the order of the songs.
I don't think it's really a brave choice unless you name the films of "Annie" or "A Chorus Line" as superior to their stage counterparts. That would be surprising, at least to me and I'd imagine to most posters here.

'Camelot'. Tremendously dull to sit through in a theatre, gorgeous and heartbreaking onscreen.

Though I really enjoyed "The Color Purple," it in no way compares to the movie or the novel. The dramatic beats are too broad and the payoffs too simple for it to be better.
But it IS still a really good show.

I found the musical to be far superior to the movie.

I agree. Particularly with Evita, which is such a bore on stage.

I agree with Grease, for sure. Also, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, and Carousel I liked better as movies. However, it could be just that I grew up seeing those and got used to them at an early age.
I disagree about Evita. Madonna just killed it for me. I so much prefer the stage version with anyone but Madonna in that role.

I like Sweet Charity and Damn Yankees better as movies.
I love the Kiss Me Kate movie, but it's fairly different from the stage show. Cabaret film and movie are entirely different creatures.
I see Borstal forgot Paint Your Wagon, again.

Iloveflops, I totally agree. I don't know if it was because I saw the movie, "Chicago" before the show....but I felt like the story made a lot more *sense* in the movie as opposed to on-stage.

You have a problem with us branching out and including movies that became musicals?
The topic is called "Movies that Were better than the show." All three of those are shining examples of a movie that was better than the show. Who cares which one came first?
And just to jump around a bit:
"The term "I disagree" - That's the main problem with this board.
The topic is about a movie that you think is better than the show. If I think "Evita" is better as a film, that's my opinion, period. Your opinion about anyone's opinion is not part of the discussion. Just list the films you prefer over their stage counterpart and be done with it. Get it?"
...it's called a discussion board. Where people can discuss various topics all related to one general thing (in this case, Broadway). If you look at the person's post, they aren't bashing another person's opinion. They're briefly stating that they disagree, and then moving on to briefly explain why.
And we DID list films we prefer over their stage counterparts. You still bitched. Plug it up, Carrie, plug it up! Then move on.
