Moving Seats

This probably sounds like a stupid question but here it is: I'm seeing Head Over Heels tomorrow. I bought cheap balcony tickets from TodayTix- I was planning on rushing and getting presumably better seats but I can't get there any earlier than 1:15 at this point. Is there any hope of me getting moved to a better seat if they're empty/how would that happen?

Move after intermission. Scope out unsold on tickets on stubhub/Ticketmaster before the show. This show isn’t selling out so I’d think it’s a good possibility.

Ask one of the ushers upon arrival. When I went the other week, people from the balcony moved to empty seats in the mezz after intermission.

When I saw the show the first week in September, I had balcony seats.  I walked all the way up there to find no one there including ushers.  They had closed down the balcony, but nobody told me.  I was instructed to go to mezz where I was reassigned a second row center seat.  (It helped that I flirted).  My advice to you is not to buy an additional ticket.   (Unless it is doing better business than when I saw it).  Chances are they will relocate you, but people who have seen it more recent can maybe verify.   If you are not greedy with your seats, just act like you know where you are sitting and get a better seat. I do it at concerts all the time.   (How shameful of me!)

I would not be worried if you end up sitting in the balcony, it’s great in this theatre and very intimate.

That being said, I saw it last week and the balcony was closed and maybe only the first four rows of the center mezz were being used.

their rush is exclusive to TodayTix, so there's no need for you to show up at the theatre early if thats your issue

Their rush is online only so no need to get anywhere by a certain time. As long as you are online at 10am you should be fine to get one.

Sorry- should have worded this better. Can't get to the theater until 1:15 because  I have practice from 7-10:30, and was nervous to have someone else do the rush for me (the girl I'm going with is also on my team). As of right now we are sitting in the first row of the balcony, but I'm planning on scoping things out online and seeing if we can move during intermission

Again it's an online rush. You don't have to show up at the theatre at all to rush.

Yes, I understand. But the online rush opens at 10, and I could not be on my phone until 10:40. Wanted to make sure I had tickets before I dragged a friend on the train all the way to New York.

So it is 12:49pm EST now and there are still Rush Tickets available on the Today Tix App for the evening performance tonight at 7:00pm. You should be fine at 10:40am getting a rush seat.

I went yesterday to the matinee (rush seat in the dress circle) and before the show started the usher said "feel free to move wherever you feel comfortable at intermission." The ushers there are extremely nice and basically don't care. So get down to the dress circle for intermission. If you buy rush seats you will either be in the front row or scattered in the orchestra or dress circle. Still a great deal at $39.

Your original post stated you "already had cheap balcony tickets".  So wouldn't you have had tickets, before "make sure I had tickets before I dragged a friend..."  I usually don't care about such things, but since I took the time to post and offered a helpful suggestion, I have to say.  Your story doesn't make sense.

Some general rules for moving seats from someone who ushers on Broadway.

1. If you see an empty seat that is still empty when th show starts, NEVER move once the house lights go down. There could be late seaters. Furthermore, never tell an usher “I’ll move when they come.” I’ve never met a fellow usher who likes hearing that. Not only is it annoying for them, but if people do come in late, not only would we have to move you back to your ticketed seats, but it can end up bothering those around you once the show starts. Wait till intermission.

2. Ask an usher at intermission if it’s ok to move. Personally, I pretty much always say yes, but it’s good to ask. Say, someone made a bee line to the restroom and you didn’t notice that, and just assumed it was an empty seat. Sometimes I’ve noticed that someone ducked out early for intermission and saw that, I’d be able to tell you, if I noticed that it could be someone’s seat.

3. And finally, sometimes ushers move people lower down if the section is pretty empty. Clearly this is something that is going on at head over heels and it was something that happened a lot when I ushered the Jimmy Buffet musical.

I am clearly spending too much time reading both theatre and theme park boards--I saw the title "moving seats" and immediately wondered if King Kong had added "motion seats" in the Broadway Theatre. I'm glad we haven't reached that point.

if anyone was dying of curiosity, I moved from the balcony to the third row of the orchestra during intermission after asking the head usher. Loved the show and cannot wait to go back
