The casting for this film is pitch perfect, all of them incredibly inspired choices. Streep and Roberts are weirdly enough the most questionable of the bunch, but given Wells' casting choices for the other characters I'm thinking he sees something in the Streep/Roberts pairing that might just end up working really well.
Mulroney--who's ridiculously hot--is just the right choice for the kind of role he has to play and seeing his interactions with Abigail Breslin will be so creepy.

Can't wait to hear more casting.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Wow! Love it! It'll be like a My Best Friend's Wedding reunion!

So far, this is solid casting, but I share the same concerns with a lot of other people. I don't know about Streep and Roberts. I love Streep to death, but she's never been the most volatile performer. I mean, she can play cold/cruel/icy with the best of 'em, but I've never seen her in a role like this where she really has to bring the crazy. I'm excited to see what she does with it, though.

I'm excited for the film, but I am still upset it's not Sissy Spacek and Laura Linney as Violet and Barbara and only Mary Louise Parker as Ivy will mollify me.

I agree that Streep isn't typically as volatile as Violet is supposed to be, from actresses of her generation I think Glenn Close is someone who sticks out as having a reputation for playing characters that are not only cruel and icy but also insanely volatile. Not casting Close in this seems like a missed opportunity, the film will definitely test Streep's acting abilities in a way that no film has done since ADAPTATION. She gave a very unexpected performance in that movie so here's hoping the same kind of magic happens with AUGUST.
Roberts would have never been my number one choice for Barbara but the more I think about it, the more I'm getting used to the idea, and really, you need someone of her caliber to hold her own against Streep who tends to outshine younger actresses she works with (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, ONE TRUE THING, JULIE & JULIA being some more or less recent examples).

Sorry, but the only actress I've ever wanted to see as Violet on film was Ellen Burstyn. I can't think of any other actress who would do it as well as she would.

I always thought Lily Tomlin or Grace Zabriskie would be tremendous film Violets (as neither seem to do stage anymore. I would have thought they would have been ideal in the play versions as well...)

I believe someone on the board mentioned that Tomlin was heavily pursued to do the stage version during the original run. Love Burstyn but I haven't been impressed with her role in POLITICAL ANIMALS where she plays a very stereotypical boozy, sardonic mother/grandmother, it's a very superficial type of work she's doing in that show but then again the material is hardly as juicy and good as AUGUST: OC. Spaceck would have been explosive, Glenn Close would have been incisive and intense as hell, we'll see what Streep does with it, I just hope she doesn't do something similar to DOUBT where she was hammy and larger than life in moments where subtlety and quietness would have been stronger.

I hope they change the plot of the film to where it focuses on Mulroney's character and how he likes to run around naked and have sex with lots of men.

Meh, I've never found him to be much of an actor.

I was hoping for Kyle Chandler, but I'm not unhappy. Whoops, no. I was hoping Chandler would play the Sheriff. Mulroney is perfect for Steve.

Grace Zabriskie would be PERFECT. She's always been one of my favorite actresses. Someone needs to get her for a stage production at least.

I also think that Glenn Close and Sissy Spacek would have been better choices for the role. They can do explosive quite well.
