Will there really be competition this year? Someone will win of course. But Spring Awakening closes in Jan. Dames At Sea not doing all that well. Thoughts?

Color Purple?

Spring Awakening might have stood a chance if Ken Davenport had actually done something to get their grosses up..

It would be an utter joke if Dames at Sea wins, let alone nominated

The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. And we won't until after it opens, the Tiny committee discusses shows based upon their open dates

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

As of now, I think the nominees will be:

The Color Purple
Fiddler on the Roof
Spring Awakening

Though if there is a fourth slot, She Loves Me.

Shuffle Along has quite the cast and creative team.  It may be a big frontrunner if it is considered a revival.

How many Tony slots are there usually for revivals?

If there are five revivals or less, there can be three nominees for musical revival.  I believe if there are three or less votes between the third and fourth revival, the category can be expanded to four nominees.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

I think this will be a four-nominee year. The possibilities, to my knowledge, are Fiddler on the RoofSpring Awakening, Dames at SeaThe Color PurpleShe Loves Me, and potentially Shuffle Along.

I think that everybody is hesitant to predict any Spring Awakening production/performance nominations since it'll be long-closed by the awards, but if there's any spot I would guarantee a nod for it, it would be Revival.

That said, I think locks will be for Spring AwakeningFiddler, and Color PurpleDames will probably get locked out. We'll have to see how She Loves Me goes, and what the committee decides on Shuffle Along

She Loves Me is at Roundabout and their productions are usually so well done, look at On The 20th Century and Violet just in the last 2 years, and Anything Goes in 2012. Those were all nominated. (although was Violet considered new since it was Off-Broadway before? I can't remember)

I have high hopes for She Loves and really hope it will get in there. Same goes for Laura in the lead actress category, but that's another topic.

No, it wasn't considered new. It was considered a revival because it was a revival.

I just couldn't remember because it was the first ever Broadway production, what the ruling had been. But of course that's the case with Dames as well, duh.

I have no idea how your comment remotely has anything to do with this thread. And I see you just joined 7 days ago. Typical mistake.

Though Roundabout does have their share of misfires like the 2001 revival of Follies, The Threepenny Opera, Pal Joey, Bye Bye Birdie, etc.

You make absolutely zero sense. If you have nothing to add to the convo of THE THREAD that actually has something to do with the thread. Why even comment?

"This post was in no way a negative post. Nor implying that there would be no competition. I was merely wondering what everyone's thoughts were with some closing before the TONYS and or possibly closing before hand. Nothing more nothing less.

This isn't a conversation yet as no one has seen all of these yet. I'd say Shuffle Along is looking like it will def get a nom though.
