Has there ever been a musical based on a certain source material that you feel the creators didn't get quite right but is still a great idea for a musical? I have two right off hand.
Camelot-- The Once and Future King is one of my all time favorite books and while Camelot is certainly a good musical (one of my favorites), I think maybe it's not the best musical it could be. With grand set pieces, action, magic and a complex story and characters, I think it's the sort of story that contemporary creative minds could really do something great with.
Lestat-- Bear with me here. I still think that Interview With the Vampire would make a great musical. Just keep Elton John and Bernie Taupin away and don't bite off more than you can chew!
It's a tricky question though since we all know how the creators were plagued in the creation of either show!

I'll go ahead and say Wicked, thus echoing the sentiments of those out there who liked the book more than the musical, and beating everyone to the ubiquitous punchline of every post.

...that's not asking the same thing at all, muscle.
Personaly, yup, I agree with Pegasus. Wicked could have been a brilliant, brilliant musical.
oh my gosh a darker more complex Wicked would have been amazing. Something very not for children would have been sweet.

That was my first thought (but isn't it always on everybody's mind?). The book is so dark and intense. I like the musical, but it's so unlike the book I almost feel it shouldn't have the same title. I would love to see another musical version of the book.

Stage:
The Red Shoes - The stage version in the early 90s was supposed to be underwhelming, but the potential is limitless.
Little Women - This story has been crying out for musicalizations for decades. The recent Broadway musical got it wrong on so many levels.
Chess- Bring in a brilliant playwright to fix its clunky story. I know. Easier said that done.
Film - Guys & Dolls This time around, they should cast a Sky who can actually sing.
Rent - In 20 years or so, I'd love to see a remake because the recent film was just dismal. Maybe some indie director could get his or her hands on it and do it right.
Oh wow, good call on Little Women. I was very disappointed with the new musical. It's not hard. Stay true to the original story.

I'm going to have to say Wicked as well. Though I dislike Sweeney Todd, I think Wicked could very well work as a darker, Sweeney-esque type of show.
And don't kill me, but I think a show like Little Shop of Horrors or You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown would work so well with an ensemble. Granted, the amount of ensemble members in each would have to be tweaked, but I'd love to see a bigger ensemble for both shows, especially the latter (and give it a real storyline, too!).

How could I forget Little Women? An obvious one.
As God as my witness I will live to see the day where Chess is huge success.

Marie Christine. The Medea story set to jazz music and with some voodoo mythos thrown in is too good of an idea and deserves another execution.
I'm also waiting for someone to get Dorian Gray right. I saw an enjoyable version with a naked Max Von Essen a few years ago that came close, but was still iffy.
Wicked has its merit, but yes, it could be much better. The novel's so dark and interesting, which would make excellent theatre.
I agree, Camelot....definately.....and also Brigadoon....I just can't enough of it!
KuhnKrazy, totally agree about Chess and Little Women. I'm surprised I forgot those.
Another one for Wicked. I enjoyed the musical for what it was, but I think if they had stayed more faithful to the book and not sugarcoated some of the issues, it would have been better
And I agree with gustof777. I would love to see a darker Wicked that was aimed toward an adult audience.
But they wrote Brigadoon. I couldn't really see how that in particular could be improved upon. I wouldn't mind a new production of it though!

I hope it's in my lifetime, because that musical rocks my face off.
Good God... SOMEONE re-write Chess so Julia Murney can play Florence.
