Must-Own Physical Cast Recording

In this age of digital streaming music, I recently purchased a portable cd player from a thrift shop and I’ve thought about collecting physical Broadway cast recordings. What are the essential ones that I should add to my collection. So far I have the revival of parade, Warriors and the last Sunset Blvd., of course while I’m thinking of adding some more recent cast recordings but what are some of the most essential cast recordings to listen to physically on cd.

The two-disc OBCs of Sweeney and Phantom. Something about a score needing two discs felt very special.

Those ones might be hard to find but I do agree it’s just something about having two discs for a cast recording that feels on theme

I have Sweeney and Phantom. Had them on vinyl also. I would add RENT and the JEKYL & HYDE concept recording to the double CD list.

Must-Own Physical Cast Recording

Two physical CDs I still have in my possession cause f*ck our tech overlords are essential to me:

1998 Papermill Playhouse recording of Follies

1995 National Theatre recording of A Little Night Music with Judi Dench

I imagine both are hard to come by at this point, but they are my precious(es).

Speaking of two-CD recordings: either the OBC or JAY studio recording of The Most Happy Fella, both of which are nearly perfect renderings of the unique and affecting show. (The latter is actually on three discs!)
