Strike that... I think we owe NINE an apology....UUUUUUUGGGGHHHH!!!
It was a blah film to begin with. Sure NINE was bad but at least the numbers weren't...THAT!

I'll $ave my money for Into the Woods...
You never really see her drink in the film, and trust me that was one of the better moments. Sony really should be more worried about the bad word of mouth this is getting, its such a mess of a film.
I"m kind of surprised they're releasing such lengthy excerpts. I know they'd have to release more than a trailer to build buzz for a holiday film, but were they really expecting positive responses to these numbers?
Actually, I don't care how bad the film turns out to be, Sia's "Opportunity" is still my midmorning jam.
Okay so when the best performance comes from Jenna Elfman.....yeah something's wrong. And why put someone as immensely talented as Tracie Thoms in the film and don't let her belt one note, yeah that's just wrong too.
I was kinda rooting for this one, so many great opportunities with this...and it's all squandered in a really bad script. Makes me really curious to see what Emma Thompson had come up with.

Sony probably leaked the movie themselves. That way they will be able to blame low ticket sales on piracy and not on their $h!tty movie.
edit: ts not really fair for me to call it ****ty, as I have not yet actually seen it.

Since when has that been anything that stopped anybody around here?
'Actually, I don't care how bad the film turns out to be, Sia's "Opportunity" is still my midmorning jam."
Agree. Wonder if Sia will sing the song at The Oscars with her back to the audience?
Thanks, Amoni. In my heart of hearts I really do hope it will snag a Best Original Song nom at the Oscars, and I'd pay good money to see what you described. Lol.
Just back from a screening my boyfriend DRAGGED me to. Believe me everything I saw from this film prior to the screening made me want to skip it.
Here are some notes:
I've only ever seen the original film and the Disney one (which I fell asleep through). I'm not sure either have a place in my heart other than Carol Burnett's part. I remember them being pretty sappy and cringe worthy....
This film has sappy moments but I enjoyed them. I liked it very much. I thought Cameron Diaz (from everything I saw she was a train wreck, hate her in everything) was hilarious. I really liked the way she played this film in a non-serious way. Her Hannigan as a foster mother wasn't believable but was a very funny plot device.
Jamie Fox was too cute (and I hate him in everything). I thought his assistant (can't remember her name) was just as sweet.
Annie was just great! That kid has some really great acting chops. I haven't seen her Beasts film yet. She doesn't bring home those songs, but she does make you fall in love with her. It is something the Annie I know never did. They've done something in this film to make her sunny demeanor seem earned. She is more of a real kid than the Annies I've seen before. This is a film families will really enjoy.
This film is a LOVE LETTER to Annie. I never understood this work on stage as anything other than a family thing. This movie really takes the songs we love and pays a really terrific homage to them. The best part of it is, they aren't trying to be the old arrangements or be that. It takes them and says "hey these are good standards, let's tell this story for a modern audience."
I'm not sure it elevates itself up to a feature film, it feels like it will play well on tv. I really liked this one. I was COMPLETELY wrong about it.
Annie purists really need to look at this the way I left feeling. It is a love letter to their sacred work. I don't think that was the intention but this is tasteful, it runs a little long for me, but it was engaging and sweet.
"OPPORTUNITY" HAS BEEN GOLDEN GLOBE-NOMINATED FOR BEST ORIGINAL SONG! YES!!!

^ I didn't expect either of those nominations but Wallis is a way better actress than Aileen Quinn.
The WGA didn't get screeners. But the only musical screener we've received, ever, is SWEENEY, and it came 2 days before the voting cut off (when we were still sent in paper ballots, too) making many of us believe it was a last minute decision. I don't believe they consider writing awards possible for musicals, oddly enough. Ironic in light of the bad rep musical books are given, infamously, in the theater.

Yay!!! Congrats to "Opportunity"!!! It is such a good song! I was shocked by Quvenzhané Wallis's nomination. I thought she was great but not that great to be getting any major award nominations. Her performance was good though! She brought plenty of heart to the film and the "Opportunity" scene was her shining moment.
To be brutally honest, this was a weak year for women in film. The categories are already split, but there wasn't a single female performance of note in the awards prognostication mix until October. An odd year, even by the usual releasing practices (adult and serious films piling up at year-end). With the category split for the Globes, they had 10 actors to nominate. Makes sense she'd get one based on odds alone. It wasn't even a good year for women in comedies. (The year was so weak, Arquette might've been acceptable as Best Actress for BOYHOOD. Compare its size to Louise Fletcher in CUCKOO's NEST.)

I have low expectations but I will go with an open mind.
But just for the record, I HATED the original movie of Annie...and though I love her to death, I hated Carol Burnett in the part of Ms. Hannigan which was just basic CB schtick to me. Too many characters were just played for laughs...not character (i.e.Daddy Warbucks). I thought Aileen was fine as Annie but the script changes made little sense. I am far from a prude but just about every camera orphan shot in the original movie is focused on their underwear (shot from the ground up) - it annoyed the heck out of me.
I personally liked the Disney version better - even if it was a short version of the original...but it was truer and less gimmicky.
I am curious about this one...

Finebydesign, I agree with your review. I saw a screening this morning and really enjoyed it. I agree that it runs a little long. Not a big fan of Jamie Foxx, but he is really charming in the role. I thought Cameron was hilarious. I don't get the hate for her. Go in with an open mind and you might actually enjoy yourself.

I'm really happy for Wallis' Golden Globe nomination, she was indeed the best part of the entire movie and saved it from being as bad as MAMMA MIA!

I cannot wait to see it, I'm sure I will either love it or love to hate it!

@HorseTears, LOL! With reviews like that, it's going to rank up there with ROCK OF AGES as one of the worst reviewed musical films of this decade.
