Can Betty be black? Because I'd like to hear Cynthia Erivo sing that track. Love the idea of Ramin as Joe, also possibly Christian Borle (Sutton and Christian as lovers... um)."
Can't say that I really see Sutton Foster as Norma. I think she lacks that faded grandeur that suggests why Norma was the "greatest star of all."
Re: Cynthia Erivo. I don't see any reason why Betty has to be white (and cue the chorus of "but a female minority would never get to be in her position in 1949" in 3..2..1...). Several minority actresses played Norma, after all (Rita Moreno, Diahann Carroll).
After seeing Diahann Carroll, Petula Clark and Betty Buckley in the role, I would really love to see Donna Murphy's take on Norma. IIRC wasn't Murphy once mentioned for a Signature Theatre production?
Christine Baranski. She could sing it, at least in Glenn's keys. She's a great actress and has a striking look. I feel like she could balance the camp and vulnerability well. Toni Colette, Nicole Kidman, and Catherine Zeta-Jones would also be swell.
