Gypsy.....that's that movie starring Bette Midler, right?
And West Side Story, that's the prequel to East Side Story, right?
Sorry, I've just been too busy watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and listening to Idina Menzel's solo album that I've lost all sense of history. You know, anything that's before 1990.
"the VAMPIRE Slayer"

I'm not gonna lie, pgenre. Your icon totally inspired me to say JUST that. It is 1:35 AM, after all. I need someplace to find inspiration.
I LOVE IT!

Arthur ought to know, he convinced L. Frank Baum's grandparents that Baum had a career as a writer.
Is Laurents a giver or a taker?
Um....
LOL@Him looking like a Garden Gnome, and not knowing if it's a good or bad thing. (Well pretending, at least).
What most people don't realize is that Arthur Laurents, not Al Gore, invented the internet.

"'Arthur is one of the greats.'
Great whats?"
Narcissists.
Arthur didn't invent the Internet, but he did invent Sex.
Wait.. Arthur Laurents... was he not that man who got crucified for my sins, and then came back from the dead?
Oh man, who cares whether any of what he says is true? The man is frigging hysterical. I hope I make it to 93 and get to be as crotchety as he is.
Inflated sense of self? Let it ride. I'll read any interview he gives.
What's the big revelation? Producers go to other writers/directors for advice on a project all the time.
AL is an old, ollllllllld man.
Very good point. To suggest AL is responsible for Wicked's success is like suggesting everyone at Sydmonton Festival in 1985/6 was responsible for Phantom's success. Writers and directors chat about projects all the time.
AL really seems desperate just now for attention. What award is he craving?
Good news if Anyone Can Whistle is on its way back though. It's a fantastic score.
Wait.. Arthur Laurents... was he not that man who got crucified for my sins, and then came back from the dead?
No. Arthur Laurents is the Undead.
He subsists on the blood of former collaborators.
Regarding the Playbill Radio interview and the quote about Sondheim- "He's wrong."
"He's wrong" about what?

PGenre-
Normally, I don't have an issue with you, however slighting PJ's book recommendations is pretty...lame. Both of them are very well written and fascinating reads.
Pgenre,
Doll, I've given you a lot (and I'm still waiting on a lot in return, copy that damn thing already ). But don't diss PJ for any reason. He was there. He knoweth whereof he speakest.
To paraphrase from PIPPIN:

Don't speak of things you NOTHING about, gvendo and husk.
Though I find it interesting you find his arrogance acceptible but a mere ACKNOWLEDGMENT of said arrogance on his behalf prompts such defense. Birds of a feather...

^I was more criticizing your unwillingness to take a book recommendation than anything.
And I rather resent the arrogance comment...I wasn't aware I came off as such.
The arrogance derives mostly from the original post in which the ASSUMPTION is made that I haven't read those books, which, of course, I have. As should any self-respecting theatre fan. Their recommendation in a thread about Laurents is illusory of said arrogance.
That said, neither book is (thanks Namo) anywhere near as entertaining as EITHER of Laurents' tomes, though Hart's is interesting in its own, less dishy, way.
husk - nothing but love, baby.

P, if you're gonna purple up your prose like a convict trying to impress a parole board with your erudition, you might as well know it's not "That said, neither book are anywhere near..." but rather "is anywhere near...."
The more you know.
