I don't think so in this case, when they've all already been told that they're closing. They would need to tell them immediately so they wouldn't make other plans if they decide to stay open.
Admittedly, it was only a matter of minutes, but the cast of Ragtime did not find out about the week extension until after it had been announced to the press -- it was announced right after the matinee, and the cast was being told by the audience at the stage door that it had happened.
Also isn't the cast actually sign through Aug?
The cast signed for a year, which would probably take them through November.
i'm sure we, the general public, will hear one way or another soon enough. Sounds like Peters and Stritch are on board. It's up to the producers to make it happen.
Actually, my friend who is in the show is contracted through December. So, I'm assuming the rest of the cast is contracted through December as well.

I had lunch with him today and when I asked about the Bernie/Stritch rumors he replied with, "I don't know a thing" *wink* I'm hoping the wink said it all. But, I had to be respectful and not pry.

I would kill kittens to see that pair in those roles.

they should have never annouced that this was closing because now it's all confusing. they should have waited until the tonys. if they win then they should stay open but if they lose, then its a desission.
I assume that, should this extension happen, Hanson will continue on, correct? Was he allowed to sign a year-long contract?
I assume Hansen had a one year contract like the rest of the cast.
^Wouldn't there be Equity issues that might prevent that? He appears "with the permission of Actor's Equity."

Aren't those exchanges usually 6 months?

Not always. Lots of Americans have done 1 year contracts in the UK and vice-a-versa.
Hanson said a couple of months ago that he was also contracted through June 20th. I don't know if that has changed or not since then.

I wouldn't mind seeing a new Fredrik too. The Dossett idea could be nice.
I have hated John Dossett in everything I have seen him in. I really hope he doesn't take over as Fredrik.
Well I wouldn't be surprised if Bernadette requests/suggests him. Plus he's played the role before.
I think he does a great "Now" in the Wall-to-Wall Sondheim album, he's worked with Bernadette Peters before, they have a good relationship and he presumably knows the role, I'd love it if he took over. Hanson can always get an extension of his Visa if he needed to, though the process takes time so I don't know if it's something they'd be able to do in three weeks. I guess we'll see. Seriously the lack of news is making me nervous it's not gonna happen, I thought we'd find out as early as Tuesday and as late as Friday. Once again Riedel ignored the issue in his column today so even he doesn't seem to have good scoop one way or the other, so it must be true that they are still negotiating but I want to know if it's gonna happen or not. And yes, I'm definitely interested to know if Hanson or someone else will play Fredrick (I'm crossing my fingers for someone else, especially if it's Dossett)

A somewhat encouraging facebook status has appeared on at least one cast member's profile. It could be completely unrelated to the show , but something tells me it's not.
If you would like to repeat it here for those of us who don't cyberstalk performers in Broadway musicals, by all means do...

I jest.

Does it say something about hanging Elaine Stritch 'over the refreshment stand?'

I appreciate your jest, and for the record this is a friend who's in the cast who I have worked with in the past.

"isn't surprised that an hour and a half after he booked flights, the phone rang."

He hasn't elaborated further yet, and of course it could be entirely unrelated to the show in any way, but it could also mean what we all hope it means.

I would love to see Stritch's take on the role of Mme. Armfeldt. I'm sure that it would be strange and highly entertaining. Like Roz Russell as Scarlett O'Hara (which I guess she did in Auntie Mame). Maybe it would be more like Bert Lahr as Queen Victoria (which he did in Two On The Aisle).
I actually really like John Dossett. I thought he was great in GYPSY, THE CLEAN HOUSE, and a few other things.

I just don't think he's really right for this role though.

I was hoping that Carol Channing would take over Mme Armfeldt.
