Fergie was the only element of NINE I enjoyed.

I loved the movie. I'm sorry you were so distressed by it. Wonderful performances, which is of course why it received a SAG nomination for Ensemble. I loved how the ending worked. I only regret they didn't include Getting Tall, one of my favorite moments from the show. Marion Cotillard should have had Penelope's Oscar nomination. Penelope was great, but Marion was even better.

I really enjoyed it. I thought it was an excellent film adaptation of the musical and also a good translation of the original Fellini film. I can't stop watching it on Blu ray.
Nothing against Penelope, who was one of the brighter spots in the film, but I think Melanie Lauren deserved a nomination over her.

I actually watched it recently. My sister and I were pretty bored during it. I couldn't care about Guido at all. I also agree that Marshall tried to do the Chicago thing again with a show where it just did not work.

I have to agree and disagree about this movie. I didnt hate it but it wasnt what it could have been. Kate Hudson was great in the film but she didnt really belong in it at all. Penelope was good I agree that when she was "tossed" out of teh restuarant as she walked against the wall there should have been a song...it was strange that his set up was just her walking..stupid... He seems to have one style and that is basically dream sequences of songs..songs that come out of thughts like in Roxies head..way to much dialogue and to not have a song ending the movie and starting the movie was strange... loved the scenery ...though DDL was good..but so much talent and so much left out...I wanted to love this movie and it just was kind of flat.... He could do Kiss as a movie because his signature is dream sequences and that is all about that.....call it Chicago of the Spiderwoman

I thought the movie was very hit and miss.
Marion Cotillard was so much better than Penelope Cruz in terms of acting and vocals and should have gotten the Oscar nomination. Cruz was just another variation on her VCB character.
Favorite moments were "My Husband Makes Movies" "Unusual Way" (more the song than the performance--the lyrics are so perfect); "Be Italian" (mostly because it has some life to it) and Sophia Loren's sweet "Luna."

Even if an action movie sucks, it can still make back its budget overseas. People in Podunkistan don't care about the acting; they just want to see car chases. The studio will be happy to keep spending money on these. Musicals, on the other hand, have a much more limited audience base. They can't afford to screw it up because the studio will be reluctant to give money to the next director who wants to make a musical. Since there are few Hugh Jackmans out there, they have to either give the parts to singers who aren't actors (Madonna, Fergie) or actors who aren't singers (Richard Gere, Meryl Streep, Daniel Day Lewis) in hopes of drawing from their fan bases. On occasion they take a good singer/actor and miscast him (John Travolta). Marshall screwed up because he was arrogant and completely ignored this musical's built-in fan base and made a completely unrecognizable mess. I've never seen it on stage but I've heard the Raul Julia version enough to be familiar with it. My initial response (after asking, "Why is Liliane LeFleur a costume designer when the lyric specifically says she's his producer?") was "I thought this was a musical. Where's all the music?" I can understand cutting songs because of length but why replace them with worse songs and unnecessary dialogue and "aren't-I-just-the-reincarnation-of-Federico-Fellini" directed scenes.

Completely honest question: what is the musical's built-in fan base, and how could Marshall have used it to his advantage?
