There were nine shows that performed -- or whose performers at lest spoke -- at the press review yesterday. (videos in link)
Some looked really -- like Independents. Some were intriguing -- Lee Meriwether, the original Catwoman of Batman, is now in her 70's and doing a one-woman show "The Women of Spoon River," in which she plays 26 characters (none, as far as I can tell, with a cape). And there was a really terrific-looking Twelfth Night by BAMA Theater Company.

The best way to figure out what to see is to ask people on the line at a Fringe show. (That's probably the best thing about the Fringe!)
The worst thing about the Fringe is walking away from a show wondering:
If this show was accepted, what were the 600 like that they DIDN'T choose?

Posted: 8/8/12 at 4:54pmI have a good friend in NIGHTFALL ON MIRANGA ISLAND. He says it's a lot of fun. It's a comedy about pirates so I don't see how that can't be fun!

I'm working on Miranga Island and will promise, if nothing else, a lot of silly fun. Same team that did POPE at Fringe two years ago and The Spidey Project at the PIT last year. This is my first year I'll actually be able to see other shows (working one show instead of the festival itself), so hopefully I'll manage to see some good stuff.
I have a friend involved in Grimm, which is getting some nice buzz. And the writer of Snow White Zombie Apocalypse had Mic in the Fringe last year, which I enjoyed.

I've seen two shows at the Fringe so far, and glad I saw both, though the second one was more satisfying.
Night of the Auk is a shortened campy revival of a science fiction play that was on Broadway for five days in 1956, directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Christoper Plummer and Claude Rains!
Tail!Spin! uses verbatim public comments, speeches, e-mails, text messages, etc. to retell for comic purposes four political sex scandals -- Anthony Weiner (sexting), Larry Craig (the Idaho Senator caught soliciting a man in a bathroom), Mark Foley (salacious IMs with Congressional Pages), Mark Sanford (governor who disappeared to have adulterous affair in Argentina)

So, full disclosure, I’m directing a Fringe show this summer, Gay Camp, and yes the title says it all. It’s gay, it’s camp, it’s Gay Camp. The show opened last night to a sold out crowd (we actually had to turn away about 10 people). Our audience seemed to really enjoy the performance, so hopefully that will translate into some good buzz. The show has been an absolute blast to work on and if you come check it out I can promise you’ll have a good time.

Night Of The Auk is not short enough! An hour of my life gone!
Same for Dark Hollow.
I sure hope this year's Fringe has better to offer!

Posted: 8/12/12 at 11:23pmI saw Miranga Island during a pre-Fringe run at The Magnet Theater. It was already a tight, polished production with great energy, and I understand it has since been sharpened up and th score improved. It is one I am very excited to see.

Except that with Dark Hollow you lost closer to two hours (unless you had a seat you were able to sneak out of).

Posted: 8/19/12 at 1:17amI saw Pieces on Thursday and loved it. It tackles a topic a lot of people don't want/like to talk about. If you can get to the last show on Sunday night, I highly recommend it.

Posted: 8/19/12 at 11:05amI've only seen one fringe play so far, and it's because I know the playwright. "Vacuum" at the Cherry Lane Theater. I liked it very much. It raises some pertinent issues.
