Next to Normal doesn't have a book? Are you kidding me?
I don't think there are very many categories that have it "all sewn up". Not that we ever really know, since we never hear about how close any of the votes ever really are. All we have is assumption.
I found the choreography in Once to entirely enhance the piece and it moved me. Watching Newsies I just thought, "cool". One complemented the piece and the other didn't.

The choreography in Newsies is of a tradition. It is exciting to watch and would be the more obvious and conventional win.
The choreography in Once is distinctive and highly original. It takes the elements Irish step-dancing and creates a style of movement that is specific and unique to the storytelling.
Spring Awakening may have been repetitive and "just jumping" but it told the story in an entirely unique wa7.
And Shrekster--my current favorite choreographer is also Sergio Trujillo. He does high-energy and storytelling both equally well.

GO GATTELLI!
willep,
Can't believe you preferred the "choreography" of Once (it had any?) to the choreography of Newsies. Hey, come to think of it, you should work for the Times!

So happy to see this article. I've loved Hoggett's work in Black Watch and American Idiot. I truly believe he's one of the most interesting and exciting people working in the theater today. His work on Once is exquisite. It isn't traditionally "dance," but he works with that ensemble, instruments and all, and gives them moments and gestures that are...perfect.
Newsies has the most impressive dancers, but Once is the show with the most revealing, moving, and thoughtful movement on stage this season.

American Idiot had AMAZING choreography. I think it tells the story more than the songs actually. It was so revealing.
I think Newsies will win choreography and Once will win Best Musical because those wins would match more traditional thoughts about the Tonys which I think they need this year. Once is the more artsy and critically acclaimed one so it'll win Best Musical. Newsies has the flashy, high-energy dance that "deserves" best choreography. That way they both get the press they need for tours and sales and the ability to say "Tony winning musical_____" It's all political.

I LOVED THE MOVEMENT IN ONCE!!!
I hope it wins.
It is interesting and daring and complicated and moving. It's not just taking a bag of tricks and putting them in order on stage. It's actually connected to the story and says something. It's like Spring Awakening's choreography. It's not traditional, but neither is the show.

Posted: 5/29/12 at 2:54pmI did not see ONCE. Could you explain me what are exactly the MOVEMENTS and TRANSICTIONS in the show? I mean, to deserve a Tony?

That and best score are the only 2 catagories where there really is no question of who is going to win.
As long as there is more than one nominee, there is always a question. Personally, I really hope Newsies does not win for score, but the voters may go against the rules and vote based on the ineligible material rather than give Wildhorn any consideration.
