NYCC Parade Cast Album?

I don't know if any of you saw this earlier today. City Center is starting to tease us on Twitter again. I really hope they go through with this. Also, if this does happen, I thought I would create this thread for discussion.

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

I really would have liked the Jordan, Benanti, Henry concert to have been recorded (other than what is on that site)

I would love to hear a new cast album but I doubt it would get as much play from me as the OBC recording. I’ve only listened to the Donmar album a handful of times.

I listened to some of the OBC Recording yesterday for the first time and absolutely loved it! I would love to hear Ben Platt, Michaela Diamond, and Gaten Matarazzo on a new recording. What would make it even better is if it were a live album. Hearing the actors sing LIVE from the stage is truly something special!

Who's gonna pay for it? Encores? I don't think even JRB could convince his friends at Ghostlight to spend that kind of dough - huge cast, large band - but who knows?

Was it not Encores who paid for all the previous cast recordings of their productions? There have been quite a few over the years, many of which had comparable cast and orchestra sizes as this one.

Yea Encores has recorded a bunch of their shows- definitely wouldn't be surprised if they recorded this one too. Especially since a lot has changed since the original production, so it doesn't really feel duplicative or unnecessary. Yes we have the London cast recording- but a high profile new American cast recording would definitely drum up more buzz.

We are talking $300,000.

It would need to sell 10,000 copies to break even. Even with Ben that's is going to be very hard.

Does anybody know if Brigadoon broke even? Wasn't that the last show recorded from NYCC?

What would the chances be that they recorded a performance for a LIVE cast recording? Has NYCC ever done that?

Yes, off the top of my head Brigadoon and A New Brain most recently. Unless you mean a live recording in the sense that Six was recorded live on opening night?

Money for a cast recording would not be coming from Encores. The BRIGADOON recording was paid for by the Frederick Loewe Foundation, as was the recording of PAINT YOUR WAGON. PIPE DREAM was paid for by R&H.

What else would live mean? Brigadoon and A New Brain were recorded in a studio. Pipe Dream was recorded live.

City Center's Songs for a New World also released an album.

Live like it was recorded at a performance vs. studio recording.

Perhaps I am overreading that person's question in the first place.

Ben Platt has a record deal with Atlantic Records. The Encores production has commercial producers behind it.

Stacey Mindich has also underwritten several of Encores’ albums, including Songs/World and Brigadoon. She is on City Center’s Board, has boatloads of money, and is close with JRB and Platt (she produced Bridges and DEH).

All that to say, an album isn’t out of the question even if it wouldn’t break even, regardless of who is putting up the money. If it is indeed moving to Broadway, that’s even more reason to do the album.

Folks here just want what they want. The reality is it's very expensive and anyone anywhere who thinks this show would sell enough units to come anywhere near breaking even, well... it would actually have to sell more like 20.000 to come anywhere near breaking even and what people just don't want to know is that there's no huge audience begging for a new recording of this.

The certainly did not pay for the recordings on DRG, which is why those recordings are owned not by Encores but by DRG. What shows were recorded on other labels? I'm not sure Encores has EVER paid for a recording.

Ghostlight Records is the distributor for the majority of the more recent Encores cast albums including Pipe Dream, The New Yorkers, Lady Be Good and Songs For a New World. Merrily We Roll Along and A New Brain are on the P.S. Classics label.
